5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, Engaging and Honest, April 2, 2001

This review is from: Getting Sane Without Going Crazy (Hardcover)
The subject of mental health continues to be taboo for many people. Consequently, finding help during a crisis may feel like a Herculean task.

To address the issue, Dr. Dorree Lynn has done a masterful job creating a guide to mental health. In a frank, honest manner, she distinguishes between the various types of therapies, both traditional and non-traditional, finding the right services, as well as the nuts and bolts of the insurance system. In effect, "Getting Sane Without Going Crazy" is a roadmap through the stereotypes, misconceptions and and mystique of mental health.

Throughout the book, Dr. Lynn asserts a very empowering truth: Every client has an active role in their own healing. Whether in choice of practitioner, therapy style, length of therapy, or type of treatment, the client's voice counts. While many struggle with the 'doctor always knows best' mindframe, Dr. Lynn presents a refreshing reframing of therapy dynamics.

Of particular interest, was the chapter comparing psychotherapy and spirituality. At first glance both appear to be unrelated entities. Dr. Lynn, however, makes the point that the end result, a feeling of wholeness, is a shared goal. Although different paths are taken, a spiritual or psychotheraputic journey share the same outcome.

Whether faced with a life crisis, or battling depression, finding help may feel like a daunting process. It may seem as if the decision to enter therapy, and with whom, is too much. In a clear, well planned manner, "Getting Sane Without Going Crazy" unravels the task at hand. Dr. Lynn arms the client with knowledge vital to the success of any healing process. In an era where the quick fixes provided by the Dr. Lauras of the world are considered Gospel, Dr. Lynn offers a guiding voice of reason.

"Getting Sane Without Going Crazy" makes extremely enjoyable and interesting reading. Whether you are considering therapy, or know someone who is, this is an extremely well-made resource.

I am organizational consultant, a mom of three and a wife. I have looked long and hard for a sensible, practical, readable book to give to my clients. Eureeka! This is it. I also found Gettimg Sane personaly helpful. The book also raised questions I had never thought about. What a treat. It is an informational page turner, written by a woman who is not afraid to put herself on the line. I am waiting for the workbook for use in my courses. Do it soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisinly Interesting, March 2, 2001
By A Customer
I expected the book to be different, more humerous. But, I was was drawn in by the interesting and quirky way Dr. Lynn thinks. She is very infomative and very real which seems unusual for a therapist type. I learned a lot. I didn't always agree with what was said. But, that was OK. Dr. Lynn leaves plenty of room to disagree.

I think she sounds like a good person to talk to.

I am not someone professionally versed in psychology nor any of the technical vocabulary that goes with it, nevertheless, as a lay person, I totally, without reservation reccommend Getting Sane without Going Crazy to all my fellow lay people. If you are interested in finding out what is happening in the trade of therapy and care giving, you are in luck, because this book does all the research for you. It is a very useful tool.

4.0 out of 5 stars I usually hate shrinks, but..., February 14, 2001
By
I usually hate shrinks and all they stand for, but my girlfriend swore by this book, so two weeks ago I started to read. Like always I expected very little, nevertheless once I started, I just kept going to the end. It was not pretentious or hoky in its style, and better yet, I did not walk away being told that I wanted to have sex with my mother. (Isn't that what shrinks usually say?) I would totally reccommend the book. Even I don't look at psychology and shrinks in the same way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intimate Knowledge, January 31, 2001
By A Customer
I am quite taken by Dorree's breadth of knowledge and her ease with expressing it for the lay person such as my self. Reading

Reading Getting Sane was no different than sitting and talking with her and listening to her wise, clear voice. Her passions and prejudices come through , easily and thoughtfully. And, she leaves room to agree or disagree with her conclusions. She says she is going to do a workbook to accompany this book. I can't wait.

At times, life can be tough for all of us. Being prepared for that "curve ball" makes adifference. I know it has helped me.
