You’re Getting a Baby Sister!
Sheila Sweeny Higginson, illus. by Sam Williams. Little Simon, $7.99 (24p) ISBN 978-1-4424-2050-2

With sensitivity and humor, Higginson gives prospective older siblings the scoop on what to expect from the new bundle of joy: “Baby sisters are darling./ Baby sisters are cute./ But don’t let her looks fool you—/ because here is the truth.” Williams’s gentle pastel palette depicts families celebrating the arrival of their baby girls; the expressions on the older siblings’ faces show mixed emotions. Little sisters drool, smell, scream, and break toys (“the ones you love too”), concedes Higginson. But there is a silver lining: “You can be her first teacher—/ show her things that you know./ Give her patience and love—/ she’s just starting to grow.” It’s a pitch-perfect primer that reminds readers of the upsides of being a big brother or sister, without minimizing or trivializing those less-than-wonderful moments. Available simultaneously: You’re Getting a Baby Brother!

This book is so negative. I have a 2 year old little boy. The last thing I want to tell him while preparing him for a new baby is all of the negative things about babies. It starts by saying how cute the baby will be....leads up to don't let her fool you...she will actually pull your hair, scream and cry, steal you toys, take your attention....etc. The book wraps it up with a positive spin. I won't read this to my son because he is 2 and he doesn't need to be worrying about negative aspects of having a sister. He needs to be excited about helping and teaching and being a brother.

This was extremely helpful for my 3 year old to start our discussions about her baby sister's upcoming arrival. Simple language but great information for a young one!

Someone bought this book for my three year old son a few months before his new little sister arrived. He loves it! He wanted to read it all the time before the baby and he would refer to what it said after the baby. It even made the pregnant mommy tear up reading it. It is now my new favorite gift to buy for any soon-to-be older brother or sister. There is even a section in the back to add a photo and details about the baby sister after she arrives. Great book!

My son is 3 and he love when I read it. He calls it his sister book. I was hoping to find a book to give him a better understanding of becoming a big brother and what's going on in mamas tummy...but this is just a cute book explaining what joys and jokes having a sister will bring. Easy to understand for a toddler :)

This is a great book to get your child ready for a sibling, and I especially like the fact that one of the pages shows the Mom nursing the baby, rather than giving it a bottle. Another nice touch is that each page features children of different races, so no one will feel left out reading this book.

Our baby sister hasn't arrived yet, but we have been reading this book in preparation and my son really enjoys it. It makes me a little sad at the part of "when mom's feeding the baby, you'll just have to wait", but I guess that is soon going to be our reality.

This book is perfect for toddlers to understand that a new little sister is coming. It tells the real life things that are going to happen. It has both big brother and big sister relationships in this book. Perfect for what I was looking for, for my son.

I was excited to find a book that doesn't say, "babies sleep in cribs" or "babies drink from a bottle" because my babies don't. I was even more impressed that there's a picture of the Mommy nursing the baby in this book. Well done!!
