4.0 out of 5 stars Seduction, October 26, 2007
This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
After the recent death of a beloved aunt and devastating life-changing news, Susan Pettiford returns to North Carolina. All the doctors she has consulted have determined the only course of treatment for the fibroid tumors that have ravished her uterus is a hysterectomy. Susan decides to throw herself into her work as an interior designer and a tutor to young children at the local school. Lucas Hamilton, an architect and real estate developer, is not looking to fall in love, but has set his goal on besting the father he never got a chance to know. Susan is determined to have one last fling before her surgery, so she invites Lucas Hamilton, a man she hardly knows, to her home for dinner and seduces him, with the intent of never seeing him again in Gwynne Forester's latest novel, Getting Some of Her Own. Lucas cannot get that night with Susan out of his head. When he figures out he has been used, he is furious and vows to get Susan to tell him why. Susan would rather avoid him, but everywhere she turns he is there. The passion between them is so intense, it is evitable they at least try to be civil to one another. As their friendship grows, so does the romance.

This was one of few books by Gwynne Forster that I was really into from the beginning. She really drew me in with the seduction and the ensuing chase between Susan and Lucas. I was even rooting for Lucas and his father. However, I must put my social worker hat on and admonish her on how she handled the issue of adoption. While I realize this is a work of fiction, but when writing about societal issues and laws, I believe there should be some semblance of truth. It really bothered me that she made the adoption process so easy. There is no way, in any state, that an adoption could have happened as fast or as easy as she made it in the book. You just cannot decide to adopt a child in the AM and have it finalized or even have that child come live with you in the PM; there are just too many steps that must be taken. While the perspective parents may not like all the red tape and bureaucratic paperwork, it is all about protection of the children; not something that can be trivialized. Beyond my issue with this, Getting Some of Her Own was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!!, October 2, 2007
This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
Susan Pettiford was a thirty-four year old successful interior designer from New York. She had it all and would someday love to marry and have children. Susan was given some medical life changing news that she thought would make her an old maid so she decided to have a fling with Lucas Hamilton.

Lucas Hamilton was an architect with issues of his own. He had to come to grips with a man that he hated for 34 years. He longed for Susan but Susan wouldn't allow him to see how she felt towards him. Lucas knew she was keeping something from him but he didn't understand what.

Getting Some of Her Own is a romance novel with lots of surprising twists. The characters seem to jump right off the pages and there are spiritual inspirations in various parts of the book.

I want to read more of Ms. Forster's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
I have always enjoyed Ms Forster's books, and her last two kind of touched a chord within me. In this novel you have this woman who inherits her aunt's home and holdings, but she must live in the home in a year which is a beautiful home. At the same time, she finds that she has to have a hysterectomy, cancelling any future kids, which hurts her to no end, and thinking that she won't be able to enjoy sex either, she has one incredible one nighter with Lucas Hamilton, a local architect, and tries hard to quit it, but the thing is, HE couldn't leave it alone. So he tries to pursue her, but she isn't interested at first. Add to the broth, an insecure neighbor, a tutoring program with some adorable kids, affairs, infidelity and you have the makings of a great book. I know with all of these themes, you're wondering, well, what is going on? Get the book and come away feeling good at the end like I did. Peace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expect the Unexpected, July 10, 2007

This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
Susan Pettiford takes one look at Lucas Hamilton and decides that he will be the one to knock her socks off one good time before life, as she knows it, ends. She comes to the conclusion that he is just what the doctor ordered and sets out to seduce him for her own personal reward. Facing life-changing medical problems, Susan worries that she will become a spinster without having had the chance to experience the joys of good sex with someone she truly desires. After going out on a limb and seducing Lucas, she tries to walk away from the spark between them and carry on with business as usual, but she soon learns that he has ideas of his own about the future of their relationship.

Driven to succeed by his own private demons, Lucas isn't accustomed to pursuing the unattainable, which is why he won't accept Susan's excuses for refusing to be with him. Every time they find themselves sharing the same space, he turns up the heat and comes that much closer to changing her mind about them. Ultimately though, it is Susan's budding relationship with two of the children she tutors which helps her see that, while life may not always move along according to plan, it can still be full and satisfying. Meanwhile, Lucas conquers his own resistance to the unexpected changes taking place in his life and learns to embrace the unexpected. All that's left for the couple to do is figure out how to make two halves a whole.

Gwynne Forster's GETTING SOME OF HER OWN is a love-conquers-all story with a few twists and turns to keep readers turning the pages. In addition to treating romance lovers to plenty of steam, Forster mixes in just enough friendship and family drama to balance the story. I thought Susan's interactions with her treating physicians were vague and a little too brief to fully convince me of the gravity of her situation, and I wanted to know more about her as a person, but neither of these points was significant enough to take away from the story. I enjoyed it from cover to cover. GETTING SOME OF HER OWN is classic Gwynne Forster. Her fans will not be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this romantic tale. Susan's inablity to have children of her own causes her to turn Lucas away from a potential relationship. The story proves that loves conquers all. The solution lies in adopting Rudy and Nathan, thus giving Susan the children that she desires and the man that she loves. Great story!

5.0 out of 5 stars (4.5 stars) Overcoming Obstacles, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
Susan Pettiford was a successful interior designer in New York City. Susan finds out that her aunt has passed away leaving her heir to her entire estate including a house, car, and a sizeable bank account. Under the terms of the will, in order for Susan to claim the estate as her own, she must live in Woodmore for one year. There are so many obstacles in Susan's way. She just found out that she has to have surgery that will change her outlook on life and she wonders if she will ever have the family she wants. Susan has made a decision that she'll never get involved with anyone because she didn't want to get hurt...until she met Lucas Hamilton. Lucas was a very successful architect in Woodmore, and was not bad on the eyes. When the two of them meet, sparks fly. Even though both are trying to deny the connection, it's hard to do. Susan starts to have feelings for Lucas, but because of her secret she tries to stay away from him as much as possible.

Little does Susan know, Lucas has some secrets of his own. Before Lucas was born, his mother Noreen was having an affair with a man twice her senior. They were in love and could not live without one another. The only thing that was hindering them from being together was the fact that Lucas' father Calvin Jackson was married. Lucas had a lot of animosity against his dad, but he didn't know the entire story of his parents' love affair. Because of his parents, Lucas found it hard to be close to anyone until he encountered Susan. Will the two overcome their obstacles or will their secrets block them from being together?

In Getting Some of Her Own, Gwynne Forster did a good job with the storyline. I liked how the author connected all of the characters together and included some of the struggles that a number of women encounter. The only thing I did not like about this book was how Forster didn't include some main characters at the end of the book. It also didn't give enough explanation in regards to Calvin Jackson's other children. Even though the story did lack a few small details, Getting Some of Her Own was still a fairly good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quck Read....., September 2, 2007

This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
I absolutely loved this story. It was intriguiing, sensual, tantalizing and romantic and those are just a few words to describe this novel. The characters are so well depicted that you can visualize being in Woodmore with them. Susan seeks out for self gratification, without weighing the consequences of her actions. She also doesn't see how her whole life will be transformed from her personal relationships to her career choices. Just because a door closes doesn't mean that another won't open. Lucas, has been harboring for years his stand to outdue his father, he has the plan, but doesn't figure that what he thinks or believes may not be the truth... never say what you won't do, because once in a situation you never will believe your reaction. Susan and Lucas both are faced with life altering decisions and it is up to them how and who will factor into the future. Kix and Cassie have a story of their own and they are the prime example of not judging a book by its cover. Jay has a story of his own, the only character to me who has no character...hidden secrets lie within this man. Enid and Luveen, will they escape the curse of their parents loveless marriage, and find true happiness or will they follow in the path of destruction. Willis, a great guy, a keen businessman and when Grandma and Momma like you, this man has got to be a good catch. Gwynne Forrester has written a compelling story that keeps the pages turning, I look forward to seeing these characters in other stories... Great Job!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Making the best of what you got, August 20, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Getting Some of Her Own (Paperback)
First let me say that I really enjoyed reading this story. It kept me
thinking what if or is it really that important? In my opinion, Susan, the main character in the story puts too much weight on the physical. Does having a hysterectomy change a persons life so drastically? Lucas is an inspiration - Oh how we all wish for the shining knight to make it all right. This Novel is about getting your priorities straight in life.
Susan must overcome a hardship and this is her story of how she gets a little justice of her own or makes the best of what she has. You be the judge and read a very interesting interpretation. Gwynne Forster has always been and still remains my Favorite Author. From one of many of your loyal fans Nadine. Anxiously awaiting your next Novel.
