Getting the Sounds, Hot Nashville Guitar - Steve Trovato,
By James Davis (LeRoy, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Getting the Sounds, Hot Nashville Guitar (DVD)
Steve did an outstanding job of providing a few snapshots of very different, but really interesting styles. This is not for the beginner, as it really uses some advanced techniques at breakneck speed. Other country instructional material may have more variety and quantity, but everything he shows in this DVD is very ear catching and tasty. An added bonus is that these are licks you can use, they are not limited to the solo that he showed them in, but are mostly transposable and transplantable.I give this an A+ rating and only hope for some follow on DVD.

There is a lot of great content in this DVD. Steve is a very gifted player and teacher. However, the production of this DVD and the lack of TAB will make it frustrating to even advanced students who do not read standard notation. If Alfred Music had inserted more chapter markers it would have made it much more user friendly. Steve breaks down the licks very well, but without TAB or a way to quickly return to the top of the lick, it is much slower going than it needs to be. This is an older lesson that was repackaged by Alfred. They should have spent the nominal time and expense to make these lessons accessible to non reading guitarists or clearly marked that it contains no TAB. Tab is the industry standard for stringed instrument instructional material. Alfred took the cheap way out.

Steve's a great player and his flawless execution of these fast solos is very inspiring! All of the solos sound great and are very worth learning.
I also like the inclusion of written notes and not guitar tab. (There are a few minor errors in the notation but Steve takes the licks slow enough to catch on to what he's doing even if the written notes are sometimes different from what one is hearing.) I also like that there are not 100 solos and licks. The content is just enough to feel you've accomplished something. Great DVD buy if you want to learn how to solo in the country style. I'd welcome a another DVD by Steve showing even more tricks.

Bought on whim. Can't get this out of my player. Not a country fan by trade. But what Steve demonstrates is nothing short of amazing. Super fast country licks and bends. Extensive use of 9s and 13s.One minor complaint is that Steve is such a natural, he'll play a 100 single note lick and then play it slow and move on. He does this a few times. But with persistance you'll catch on and understand what he's doing. I recommend this to intermediate players who have a background in typical blues chords (extensions) and can open their mind to chromaticism. Awesome!

I read the reviews on this and was prepared but must say even being prepared didn't get me ready. He plays threw the leads to fast and even his slow is fast. Also, it would have helped a lot more if he had put the tabs instead of the music below. I'll take the advice of the other reviews and keep after it but just wanted to let people know if your wanting something that teaches you at a pace you can learn then try something else.

Amazing. Fast country licks. Steve is a natural. good for intermediate to advanced players with a background in blues/jazz chords and are not afraid to jump into a lot of blue notes.Got this on a whim. 9/10 and I am not a country player! Wow!!!

A great close up look at 4 power solo verses, broken down so you can follow, and memorize. The sheet music is not tabbed, but that is ok for me I can read somewhat and this practice is just what I needed to explore those higher registers. Reading will help you master these licks much quicker. This level assumes some conversational music knowledge, and even playing at this speed is stretching my abilties. Also some additional open string theory for thought is given. Steve's other vid's I've seen are worthwhile if not to reinforce what you already knew, coming from the expert himself. Great instruction from a good presenter.

This video seemed kind of short to me but it is really packed with some great lick and Steve really simplifies the theory behind it. He plays fast but explains what he is doing pretty well. Defintiely one of the best country guitar videos out there.
