4.0 out of 5 stars To learn Jbuilders basic functionality in a day, December 17, 2000
By
This review is from: Getting Started in JBuilder 4 (Referentia for JBuilder 4 series) (CD-ROM)
It has 25 tutorial Lessons (using its tools: fast and concise) and 5 concept Lessons (pure junks - just fancy graphic animations).

I am a sun java certified programmer, and needed to master Jbuilder IDE in a really short time for my project. So I purchased this CD, and was able to utilizing Jbuilder in a very same day.

It does not teach you any new concepts. However, if you are new to Jbuilder and need to learn how to use Jbuilder in a really short time, this might be a good choice.

Before you buy, download and try the 4 trial lessons from Referentia web site.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Good for the Foundation Version, January 4, 2001

I have only tried the free sample version, but I have found that the second lesson and subsequent lessons cannot be completed due to deficiencies in the Foundation version of JBuilder. My version is 4.0.152.0. As the CD-ROM is for beginners, who would most likley be using the Fondation version, it is unfortunate that the authors did not use this version for developing their course. If you are fortunate to be using the Professional version of JBuilder, I think that the course would be very good for those with absolutely no knowledge of JBuilder.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very very basic, December 2, 2000

When they say Getting Started they really mean "People that are still having problems getting their VCR to stop flashing 12:00."

The vast majority of this title (cd only, no book) is intended for users that have never even looked at the menus in JBuilder. If you've already spent a few hours playing around with JBuilder, you should know the majority of information in "Getting Started"

On the up side, this title *very* nicely integrates with the JBuilder environment. No more fumbling to keep your book open with one hand while you mouse around the environment trying to find what you're looking for.

This title is excellent at showing you exactly how to perform specific tasks. There's no real explanation as to what is going on behind the scenes, just click here, type this, etc. Expect to only spend 5-10 mins on each of the tutorials listed below.

Overall, I consider this title to be an excellent design for reference material. However, it is very unlikely that anything in this title is complicated enough for you to need to reference it later. I would almost certainly purchase Referentia JBuilder titles that contain more advanced concepts.

Tutorial List:
01 Getting Started with JBuilder Development
02 Taking a Guided Tour of the Menus
03 Using Toolbars to Access Key JBuilder Features
04 Using the AppBrowser to Explore Your Project
05 Designing Your Project with the AppBrowser
06 Using Components to Create Applications
07 Responding to Actions with JBuilder Events
08 Creating Tabbed Views with Page Controls
09 Learning to use the Menu Designer
10 Adding Additional Frames and Dialogs to Applications
11 Controlling the User Interface with the Layout Manager
12 Finding the Right Syntax with CodeInsight
13 Using the Debugger to Track Down Errors
14 Using the Debugger to Burrow Deep into Your Program
15 Exploring Advanced Features in the Debugger
16 Adding a Class to a Project
17 Linking to a Database
18 Querying and Using Databases
19 Encapsulating Code with JavaBeans
20 Working with BeansExpress
21 Using Graphics to Enhance Your JavaBean
22 Creating Applets and Passing Parameters
23 Manual Deployment of Applets
24 Deploying Applications
25 Exploring InternetBeans Express
