To learn Jbuilders basic functionality in a day,
By Han "Programmer" (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Getting Started in JBuilder 4 (Referentia for JBuilder 4 series) (CD-ROM)
It has 25 tutorial Lessons (using its tools: fast and concise) and 5 concept Lessons (pure junks - just fancy graphic animations). I am a sun java certified programmer, and needed to master Jbuilder IDE in a really short time for my project. So I purchased this CD, and was able to utilizing Jbuilder in a very same day. It does not teach you any new concepts. However, if you are new to Jbuilder and need to learn how to use Jbuilder in a really short time, this might be a good choice. Before you buy, download and try the 4 trial lessons from Referentia web site.

No Good for the Foundation Version,
By Gordon Wilmot (Banksia Park, S.A. Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Getting Started in JBuilder 4 (Referentia for JBuilder 4 series) (CD-ROM)
I have only tried the free sample version, but I have found that the second lesson and subsequent lessons cannot be completed due to deficiencies in the Foundation version of JBuilder. My version is 4.0.152.0. As the CD-ROM is for beginners, who would most likley be using the Fondation version, it is unfortunate that the authors did not use this version for developing their course. If you are fortunate to be using the Professional version of JBuilder, I think that the course would be very good for those with absolutely no knowledge of JBuilder.

When they say Getting Started they really mean "People that are still having problems getting their VCR to stop flashing 12:00." The vast majority of this title (cd only, no book) is intended for users that have never even looked at the menus in JBuilder. If you've already spent a few hours playing around with JBuilder, you should know the majority of information in "Getting Started" On the up side, this title *very* nicely integrates with the JBuilder environment. No more fumbling to keep your book open with one hand while you mouse around the environment trying to find what you're looking for. This title is excellent at showing you exactly how to perform specific tasks. There's no real explanation as to what is going on behind the scenes, just click here, type this, etc. Expect to only spend 5-10 mins on each of the tutorials listed below. Overall, I consider this title to be an excellent design for reference material. However, it is very unlikely that anything in this title is complicated enough for you to need to reference it later. I would almost certainly purchase Referentia JBuilder titles that contain more advanced concepts. Tutorial List:

The best I have ever seen,

Java Builder is one of the best visualized interfaces ever created for easy and useful programming. Meanwhile the availablity of a reference book based totally on Jbuilder feathers , components and methods were needed. Although so many books have been published about it but the current book is really the greatest. I as a experienced programmer, and teacher strongly recommend it to users from the begginers to advanced ones. Be sure that you won't stop using from it even after finishing all the book for the 5th time. The book contains pretty hints and useful programming concepts. In addition you can find a wide variety of features discussed in the book and nice usage of them. I congratulate the writer and hope you to have the best uses of it,rely on me,it worth!!

The title of this CD is "Getting Started in JBuilder 4" and that is exactly what it teaches you and no more. It consists of a series of tutorials on how to use the JBuilder 4 IDE. You can watch the tutorial as a video or do it yourself step by step following the directions (for this you need JBuilder 4 installed). The small programs created using the tutorials worked and I did get a good introduction on how to use JBuilder 4. The tutorials however do not teach you the Java programming lanquage and the tutorials don't give you much insight into the "why" of what you're doing but overall this training CD is a good introduction to the JBuilder 4 environment.

If you are farmiliar with Borland tools you're probably farmiliar with Charlie Calvert. He's produced some great books that I find myself referncing for years. This is NOT a book, only a CD and after going through some of the tutorials there's no real reason to return. The overall presentation is very good... some of the best computer based training I've seen. Video, sound, animation and linking with the application itself. But it does little to actually teach you anything. If you've never used the IDE before you may find it interesting, but beyond that you'll find yourself with LOTS of questions. Some of the lessons tell you to click here, type this with no explanation of why. For example, there's a lesson on creaging tabbed views. You are instructed to drop a tab sheet on your form and then drop a jPanel on top of that. In order to change the text of the tab you must change the constraints property. This seems very confusing to me since constraints is usually related to layout. But there is no explanation as to what you're doing... just follow along and repeat. Hopefully Charlie can create a reference for jBuilder 4 like he has for Delphi... please help us Charlie!

This is one of the worst purchases I have ever made. It's an absolute farse. Trust me on this one: Save your money and buy something else. I plan to write Referentia a letter asking them not to let idiots program thier software.
