Book Description

November 27, 2002 1555582796 978-1555582791 1
OpenVMS professionals have long enjoyed a robust, full-featured operating system running the most mission-critical applications in existence. However, many of today's graduates may not yet have had the opportunity to experience it for themselves. Intended for an audience with some knowledge of operating systems such as Windows, UNIX and Linux, Getting Started with OpenVMS introduces the reader to the OpenVMS approach.

Part 1 is a practical introduction to get the reader started using the system. The reader will learn the OpenVMS terminology and approach to common concepts such as processes and threads, queues, user profiles, command line and GUI interfaces and networking. Part 2 provides more in-depth information about the major components for the reader desiring a more technical description. Topics include process structure, scheduling, memory management and the file system. Short sections on the history of OpenVMS, including past, present, and future hardware support (like the Intel Itanium migration), are included. OpenVMS is considered in different roles, such as a desktop system, a multi-user system, a network server, and in a combination of roles.

Allows the more advanced reader some meaty content yet does not overwhelm the novice
Provides practical examples showing that OpenVMS is well-suited for popular modern applications
Gives a high-level overview of concepts behind internals such as memory management

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good start on the OpenVMS journey, June 2, 2004
By
This review is from: Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
This book covers all the essentials needed by the new user to become familiar and comfortable with OpenVMS in a easy to understand and well written style.

I would say that anyone with an interest in OpenVMS should have this book on his or her shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars despite what one previous reviewer said:, August 7, 2005

Patman (COLORADO SPRINGS, co United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
As a person who supports a 24x7 mission-critical VMS application with several million subscribers, the W Boudville person is, well, wrong. COBOL has been dead for decades too. No, wait, our app has a LOT of COBOL too. Not as sexy as whatever the latest trend is, but, darn, still works, reliably.

Just out of college, looking to set the world on fire? So was I 22 years ago. VMS has done pretty well by me. Now... I'd be writing Java and CSS and HTML and... Wait a minute, I do that TOO!

Anyway, neither my review or his has anything to do with this BOOK!

Oh, I work for HP and no-one that I know of has tried to get our customer off of VMS and on to HP-UX.

2.0 out of 5 stars World's Greatest Operating System, rah rah, December 10, 2005
This review is from: Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
OpenVMS is the world's greatest operating system -- and don't you forget it!

Unfortunately, OpenVMS is also moribund. Not dead, but dying, thanks to inept marketing and promotion by its owners. It's OS/2 all over again.

As to this book. If you have the misfortune of having to learn OpenVMS, then my best advice is to print out a nice copy of the OpenVMS User's Guide that comes FREE with the OpenVMS. Your system manager (VMS equivalent of a system administrator) can show you how. Once you've digested that, if you still feel the need for something else, then this book isn't so bad.
