A very good start on the OpenVMS journey,
By
This review is from: Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
This book covers all the essentials needed by the new user to become familiar and comfortable with OpenVMS in a easy to understand and well written style.I would say that anyone with an interest in OpenVMS should have this book on his or her shelf.

As a person who supports a 24x7 mission-critical VMS application with several million subscribers, the W Boudville person is, well, wrong. COBOL has been dead for decades too. No, wait, our app has a LOT of COBOL too. Not as sexy as whatever the latest trend is, but, darn, still works, reliably.
Just out of college, looking to set the world on fire? So was I 22 years ago. VMS has done pretty well by me. Now... I'd be writing Java and CSS and HTML and... Wait a minute, I do that TOO! Anyway, neither my review or his has anything to do with this BOOK! Oh, I work for HP and no-one that I know of has tried to get our customer off of VMS and on to HP-UX.

World's Greatest Operating System, rah rah,

This review is from: Getting Started with OpenVMS: A Guide for New Users (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
OpenVMS is the world's greatest operating system -- and don't you forget it!
Unfortunately, OpenVMS is also moribund. Not dead, but dying, thanks to inept marketing and promotion by its owners. It's OS/2 all over again. As to this book. If you have the misfortune of having to learn OpenVMS, then my best advice is to print out a nice copy of the OpenVMS User's Guide that comes FREE with the OpenVMS. Your system manager (VMS equivalent of a system administrator) can show you how. Once you've digested that, if you still feel the need for something else, then this book isn't so bad. |
