5.0 out of 5 stars A Life-Saver!
Quite candidly, Toby Rice Drews has made this book an ongoingly useful tool to keep around. Each chapter is independent and helps one deal with the situation/crisis at hand, and yet I found it powerful to read the whole book in two days. I have tools now that truly help me regain control of my life with an alcoholic, both when he is drunk and also when he is moody...

2.0 out of 5 stars Addressed to wives of alcoholic husbands
The title is dishonest and the book content is sexist. The book is written as though all wives are sober and only husbands are drunks (at least, every page I looked at, because of that problem I did not buy the book). The subtitle should say "A guide for women who live with an alcoholic husband" (rather than what it does say, "A guide for those who live with an...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life-Saver!, December 30, 1997

This review is from: Getting Them Sober: A Guide for Those Who Live with an Alcoholic, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Quite candidly, Toby Rice Drews has made this book an ongoingly useful tool to keep around. Each chapter is independent and helps one deal with the situation/crisis at hand, and yet I found it powerful to read the whole book in two days. I have tools now that truly help me regain control of my life with an alcoholic, both when he is drunk and also when he is moody between his drunken episodes. This author is excellent. I also wish she'd publish a book written for the alcoholic that addresses the psychological wounds he has inflicted on his family and gives him tools to accept what he has done and to change his actions. And please I hope someone does a comparison of all volumes by T.R. Drews. I am anxious to reap all her wonderful help.

This review is from: Getting Them Sober: A Guide for Those Who Live with an Alcoholic, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I read this book about a year ago while struggling to to deal with the addict in my life. Toby Rice Drews made me feel so much better about myself and my situation. I recommend it to everyone I come across who is where I was last year - the book never fails to comfort and support, and it's full of helpful suggestions that really work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Author hit the nail right on the head. Very insightful., August 14, 1997

This book has helped me a lot. Living with an alcoholic is very difficult and you start blaming yourself for everything. Now I know that it is not all me. I am starting to understand the irrational behavior and thinking of an alcoholic and that only they can help themselves and I have to help myself and not be brought down by their shortcomings

I have been married to an alcoholic 28 years. My deceased father was an alcoholic and now my 37 yr old son is an alcoholic. After reading numerous books over the years I finally found one that made sense. This book gives practical advice to the person living with an alcoholic. I thank God for the insight provided by Toby Rice Drews! I strongly recommend this book for everyone that has been or will be involved in the life of an alcoholic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indespensible, February 22, 1998

This review is from: Getting Them Sober: A Guide for Those Who Live with an Alcoholic, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Toby Rice Drews is in a class by herself. She is an absolute sanity saver and a restorer of health and equlibrium. I have been blessed with knowing Toby, and she is in person as she appears in all of her books--warm, gentle, loving, and a true giver. I have given her books to friends and family and they have found them indespensible. One slept at night with her Bible on the pillow next to her and Toby's books on top.

Consider this book if you are in a marriage/deep relationship and you are seeking to learn more about the disease of alcoholism. Perhaps you are in a 12 step program, if so, that is great. Either way, this will help you begin to understand the disease or advance your knowledge. The chapters are organized in a way that are simple and easy to read, skip around.

The title is dishonest and the book content is sexist. The book is written as though all wives are sober and only husbands are drunks (at least, every page I looked at, because of that problem I did not buy the book). The subtitle should say "A guide for women who live with an alcoholic husband" (rather than what it does say, "A guide for those who live with an alcoholic"). I had hopes of finding a good book for a male friend dealing with his destructively drunk wife. So far each book I have found whose title sounds promising ends up being addressed to the woman dealing with a drunk husband.

For women dealing with alcoholic men, what I paged through looked decent, but the book will be a real misfire for those who bought it on the title alone.
