4.0 out of 5 stars Great teen summer flick about getting in to college.
Parental pressure forces this kid to try to bribe his way off the Waitng List and into Princeton University. Trouble is, another kid is trying to murder them. Lots of ghoulish fun and a love story that isn't yucky. Dave Chappelle is a totally fun computer nerd and Stephen Mailer is cute. Andrew McCarthy is spooky. Calista Flockhart and Matt Perry have small...

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat funny, but doesn't cut it.
Getting In is an... interesting film, but after a while it becomes a dismal bore. Some parts of the film are funny, but usually it is pretty lame, and doesn't REALLY make the murderer a mystery. In "Getting In", Medical Students are mysteriously killed after being bribed off of the waiting list into Johns Hopkins Medical School. It's a little humorous and...

In "Getting In", Medical Students are mysteriously killed after being bribed off of the waiting list into Johns Hopkins Medical School. It's a little humorous and interesting at times, but other than that, it's a bore. And DON'T let the photos of Calista Flockhart and Matthew Perry on the cover of the film's recent re-release fool you... they have a total of 6 minutes airtime together, and I am not kidding.

3.0 out of 5 stars med school's a cut throat business, December 11, 2003
This review is from: Getting in [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Getting In is a simple film from '94 about a kid, who doesn't really want to be a doctor--it's more a matter of family tradition--trying to get into Johns Hopkins and getting caught up in the murder of the other students on the waiting list. The story isn't all that great and Stephen Mailer's performance is weak. Kristy Swanson does a pretty good job--for her that is. There are two surprising cameos, Matthew Perry and Calista Flockhart, both before they became big stars. Maybe I'm too used to Chandler and Ally, because I felt that they weren't right for their parts. The real gem of the movie is Dave Chappelle's character. And Andre McCarthy plays a dark role, and surprisingly pulls it off rather well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Darkly Humorous, December 23, 1998

It is light unambitious film that tickles the funny bone a fair bit with ghoulish jokes about killing people with style. This is not a bad film but it never reaches the true tongue-in-cheek styles of "How I Got Into College" or the morbid grace of "Heathers". Somewhere it falls short and in this kind of picture that means the script. The dialogue is not snappy enough and you kind of wish the psychopath would kill the pathetic hero of the picture. But there are a few chuckles that beat other 3 a.m. cable fare. The acting is not bad but I don't get the feeling it was suppose to be great either. The comedy arrangement is one innocent man, one deranged psychopath, one pretty co-ed, and a Med-School Wait List. So if you don't mind guessing the end at the beginning and never being truly surprised then this picture can give you some interesting laughs.

Anything with Stephen Mailer is good. It is such a shame that the main actor is the movie is kicked off the new cover. Calista and Matthew have 2-minute roles and get top billing!

Calista Flockhart is brilliant. Matthew Perry is brilliant. Everyone and everything, from the extra in scene five to the credit at the end of the film, is fanastic!
