Finding Answers to a Few Health Concerns, February 8, 2009
This review is from: Getting Well, Staying Well: Everything You Need to Know to Get the Best Medical Treatment (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Health care receives a great deal of national attention, and for good reason. The cost of health care continues to climb year after year, easily outpacing the rate of inflation and gradually lowering the standards of living for many Americans. Citizens want to take control of their own health and, hopefully, cut their future problems and overall health care costs down to size. Getting Well, Staying Well attempts to help men and women with some of their pressing concerns by providing straight answers to many of the most common questions relating to the health care process.
I haven't had health issues, but I realize that good health is important and I approached this book with a feeling of curiosity. I was hopeful that it would provide answers to important questions so that I could improve my knowledge of health care topics and industry concerns in order to better prepare for the future. What I discovered, however, is that Getting Well, Staying Well is not a very thorough book and it covers only a minimal number of questions about health care. The book does offer some decent organization, but the questions selected for inclusion in this book are far from comprehensive and many of them are not even that important. Scanning through the questions reveals many that have obvious answers and probably should have been excluded from the book's pages. Advice on topics like setting appointments and making sure to re- schedule if the wait is too long are obvious and they should have been left out of the book completely.
Getting Well, Staying Well offers a short introduction to each section, usually with a story about someone who had a specific health issue and how the system either worked or didn't work as expected. But like the questions and answers section, the introductions are not always as informative as they should be and many of them need to be replaced. The book also could have been improved with the addition of an index and a glossary of key terms.
Even though Getting Well, Staying Well has its share of shortcomings, there are still a few noteworthy qualities that redeem this book and save it from a below average rating. What I noticed immediately is that the writing is about as perfect as you will ever find in a book. I did not find any misspellings, bad grammar, or sentence structure problems at all and every comma and other form of punctuation are precisely in place. Second, I like the sincerity on the part of the author. He seems to have a genuine concern for the public health and he wants to provide any answers necessary to improve health for all.
Taken as a whole, this is an average book about health concerns and medical treatments and it may or may not answer some of the questions you have about health care and how to make the most of the health care system we have in the United States. The book isn't comprehensive and could have easily been several times its actual length. But it is well written and it makes a good starting book for those who want to improve their health and want to find better ways to use the health care system to their advantage.

Some good basics - short on specifics, January 20, 2009
This review is from: Getting Well, Staying Well: Everything You Need to Know to Get the Best Medical Treatment (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This could be a useful book for someone facing extensive medical work. There's good basic advice on how to interact with nurses, docs and hospitals. It also covers some common situations like eating and drinking while traveling. As an introduction the the subject it has value, especially to someone who is panicked and needs some simple answers, fast.
At 120 pages, there's not a lot of detail, though, and answers are not particularly in depth. Think Sunday supplement level of coverage. Maybe because Dr Gitnick is "physician to the stars" (hey, it's right on the cover) he might reach someone who isn't used to conducting their own research or who hasn't read Bernie Siegel.
I want to give the book 3 1/2 stars but am rounding the rating up. It's not a bad book, just lightweight both is size and coverage.

If you or someone your love interfaces with Doctor - you need this book, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Getting Well, Staying Well: Everything You Need to Know to Get the Best Medical Treatment (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Most people hate going to the doctor unless they are dying or feel like they are close to it. The reason why is because it's like they speak another language and make the patients feel inferior.
Well, this book will give you the courage, confidence and chutzpah to deal with doctors, health insurance folks and other medical personnel with ease. I loved the way the book was laid out and it gave you real "meat" to sink your teeth into if you or a loved one is going through cancer treatment or any kind of disease that is frightening.
It's like a trusty handbook you need when you are waiting in the doctor's office - reading it will give you the right questions to ask to get the right solutions. Good book.
