5.0 out of 5 stars Living history for an excellent price, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Gettysburg in 3D: A Look Back in Time: With Built-in Stereoscope Viewer - Your Glasses to the Past! (Hardcover)
All of the books in this series are great. As a stereocard maker and enthusiast, I was excited about the release of these books.
Good points: Excellent price! Excellent construction with the fold out viewer in the cover and excellent graphics giving it an 'antique' feel. Some very rare views are presented that would cost a fortune to purchase. The descriptions originally printed on the card's verso are reproduced here on the preceding page to each image so that they can be viewed and read all at once... And, did I mention the excellent price?
Weak points: Some cards which already suffered from poor image quality are made 'grainy' by the halftone printing. A few of the images are not in 3D. A few images have the left and right images reversed. While the original cards may have been this way, the least they could have done was correct them or note the error in the descriptions.
Still, these few and minor weaknesses do not detract from the overall quality of the books. Nothing can really describe seeing historical moments and people in 3D.These books should be in classrooms. I look forward to the next 2 releases in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unbelievable..., January 11, 2011

This review is from: Gettysburg in 3D: A Look Back in Time: With Built-in Stereoscope Viewer - Your Glasses to the Past! (Hardcover)
This is, by far, the most unbelievable book I swear I've ever seen. Even if you're not Gettysburg/Civil War/History interested, and/or couldn't care less about the content, you'll be amazed. The book came today, and I had gotten it not sure of how realistic it would be. Went to look at one picture, just an intended glance at that moment, and I was then locked in and looked at every picture, basically for a couple of hours instead...I'm consumed today, and much beyond no doubt... :)

The 3-D viewer (referred to as a stereo-viewer) is nothing like the loose blue/red ones you may have used as a child. It's a clear set, attached to almost like a second cover folded to the inside of the book, attached to the back of the front cover. You simply look through the two eyes like a set of lenses (and there's an opening for the nose) at the pictures, and turn the pages...There are 39 pix (& a few other text pages w/ comments, instructions, etc), and a page of info for each pic. As you start looking, may take a minute to realize how you focus your eyes and the viewer so that the 2 images blend into one and become 3-D. There were only ~3 pix that were slightly less 3-D 'looking' - i.e., just a view of woods of the battlefield. Other landscapes, such as Culp's Hill, Little Round Top are particularly excellent because it's almost as if you're standing on the front rocks in the picture. The ones with soldiers & other folks in them are the most stunning. For whatever reason, besides just the content, their face, their legs, the whole body & the chair they're sitting in, just like right in front of you.

Many of these pix are well-known, so another nice part is that you may actually notice things that you haven't in the past, either due to their size or blending in the background, i.e., they just haven't stood out. Overall I wish I every single Civil War book I have had this tool. Truly amazing...

This year is the 150th anniversary of the civil war battle. I think this book is out of print but if you can find it, get it. The 3D images are hard to focus on a first but once you learn how it is amazing what comes out. This was state of the art technology for the period and reveals tremendous detail. Awesome book, I intend to keep in my library and enjoy for years to come.

Bought this book for a friend who collects Civil War items. Thought this was a very different type of book as it is in 3D.

This review is from: Gettysburg in 3D: A Look Back in Time: With Built-in Stereoscope Viewer - Your Glasses to the Past! (Hardcover)
Purchased this for a gift for my brother who is a Civil War buff. It took him a while to see anything in 3-D, but he finally got the hang of it and was really pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular 3D, October 2, 2010

This review is from: Gettysburg in 3D: A Look Back in Time: With Built-in Stereoscope Viewer - Your Glasses to the Past! (Hardcover)
I really love this book. The viewer is built into the front cover, so you hold that up while you turn the pages. You have to relax your eyes and then all of a sudden they kick in and you are seeing wonderful 3D images of the past. I went through the whole book right away but I know it is one that I will be getting out every so often to see the pictures again. I also have the other 5 of these books and have enjoyed all of them. I highly recommend this book if you want to see wonderful 3D images.
