The music of Gettysburg: The Boys in Blue & Gray is mostly derived in one fashion or another from a single musical idea, an idea that, for me, has come to represent the tragedy and grand scale of the Civil War. The main theme, which is presented in whole in the last track, was the first to be written and it is from its’ first measures that a great deal of the music for this project was derived. What you hear in the other tracks are short underscores for various scenes related somehow to the main theme. One track, completely unrelated to the main theme, is an adaptation of a choral piece I had written—a sort of Renaissance-style choral polyphony—which became the Procession of Armies. Most of these pieces were of the kind about which Edison, regarding his work as an inventor, referred to as "10% inspiration and 90% perspiration." However, one idea came without much effort at all—My Johnny Is a Soldier. One day, I was obsessed with the idea of creating a folk song-like ballad based on the main theme but cast in a major key and then given the bittersweet words of a girl waiting at home for her lover/soldier—Will he come back? Is he dead? Rob liked it so much, we decided to record it with Grand Rapids artist Diane Penning, whose beautiful voice seemed perfect for the song and who gave it an absolutely beautiful performance. I hope you enjoy listening to all of the music on this CD and that you’ll find the combination of beauty, tragedy and grandeur that Rob captured so well on film reflected in the tracks presented here.
