5.0 out of 5 stars The best movie soundtrack we have ever heard.
I have been to Gettysburg with my wife and my sons many times (as visitors from Europe). My late cousin Gen.Phil Kearny is the only person commemorated on the battlefield who was already dead before the battle - see the New Jersay Memorial. So I take the subject very seriously and this score absolutely bowled us over. It is absolutely outstanding and the Cd has been...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad
This CD is made up of the music from the movie Gettysburg. Unlike the movie, you get to listen to the whole song and it is a good introduction to this type of music. It might be surprising to some that most of these songs were popular on both sides, many were rewritten (no lawyers out there then to scream copyright violations I guess) from eevn older songs, some going...

My late cousin Gen.Phil Kearny is the only person commemorated on the battlefield who was already dead before the battle - see the New Jersay Memorial. So I take the subject very seriously and this score absolutely bowled us over. It is absolutely outstanding and the Cd has been played incessantly since it arrived from Amazon. Randy Edleman is to be congratulated on a superb piece of contrapunctal craftmanship and TNT on having the faith and dedication to complete the film. The reinactors are such a surperb group of people, without whom, this music would never have been written and we would have been so much poorer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A majestic, moving score, May 22, 2001
This review is from: Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
One of the best parts of the epic film "Gettysburg," which chronicles a major battle of the United States Civil War, is Randy Edelman's score. Beginning with his majestic, slightly mournful main title music, Edelman provides a perfect complement to this story of courage, tragedy, and triumph.

Edelman's music is at times suspenseful, at times victorious. There are also passages of tenderness. Overall, the music effectively evokes the personal sacrifice and often conflicted emotions of the men engaged in this struggle.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Emotional Musical Score Ever Composed, March 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This music is absolutely incredible. There are huge, swelling songs like the "Main Theme" and "Reunion and Finale," and softer, more subdued ones like "Killer Angel" (one of my favorites), "Dawn," and "General Lee at Twilight." Another of my favorites is "Men of Honor" (yes, that IS "Men of Honor," not "Men of Morality." I think that reviewer is getting the song mixed up with "March to Mortality", the song of Pickett's Charge). Anyway, it's a completely peerless soundtrack that will put you back into the movie without ever turning on your TV. My mom cries every time she listens to "Reunion and Finale." I listen to this CD at about ten (out of thirty-two), but she likes pushing twenty!

Gettysburg is without a doubt the best sondtrack out there. I don't live to far from gettysburg so I frequent the battlefield all the time and driving around the battlefield and listening to this soundtrack really brings tears to my eyes. I highly recommend this soundtrack. I also recommend Glory another one of my favorites

Even if you are not a not a civil war buff or Gettysburg fanatic, or even if you hate anything associated with a war, this sound track is STILL a must buy. An absolutely first rate studio orchestra performance, very moving music, classically arranged. Where do many of the musicians go who prefer not to take a chair in a symphony or major network orchestra (e.g. NBC)? They go to studio production jobs. The orchestra and the arrangements are just superb!

"Gettysburg" was a wonderful movie, and anyone who enjoyed it will doubtless want to own and enjoy this soundtrack. The music of "Gettysburg" complimented the movie very, very well, and it is a pleasure to listen to in its own right. The battle music of "Battle of Little Round Top" is perhaps the most rousing battle music I've ever heard--unforgettable. The rest of the album is quite good as well. The ONLY reason I did not award the fifth star is that this album lacks a big blockbuster comparable, for example, to Mary Fahl's wonderful "Going Home" on the "Gods and Generals" soundtrack. That aside, this is a very very good soundtrack featuring excellent music which captures the Civil War theme beautifully and effectively.

GETTYSBURG: MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK is, in my opinion, the best movie soundtrack ever composed in the history of film. I've heard it far more times than any other movie soundtrack, and yet I never grow tired of it. It never ceases to amaze me.

Beginning with the beautiful, heroic "Main Title" and ending with the equally well done (if not even better) "Reunion and Finale", GETTYSBURG takes you through 18 incredible tracks ranging from solemn, quiet pieces such as "Dawn" and "We Are the Flank" to several different epic battle compositions found in "Battle of Little Round Top", "The First Battle", "Over the Fence", "Charging Up the Hill", "Battle at Devil's Den", and "March to Mortality". Mr. Edelman's additions of his excellent arrangements of "Dixie" and "Kathleen Mavourneen" also blend in perfectly with the rest of this music masterpiece.

This soundtrack easily earns 5 stars for its perfect music, and I recommend it to everyone (along with the just-as-excellent film it complements).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest, July 31, 2004
By
This review is from: Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I really don't know how to put how I feel about the soundtrack to "Gettysburg" into words. It is one of the most beautiful soundtracks I have ever heard, and it is amazing not only how great it is to listen to from a CD player, but to listen to in the movie as well. It perfectly captures the emotions running throughout the film like very few other soundtracks have (though I agree with another reviewer here, "Glory" is certainly up there with my all-time favorite OST).

Again, I apologize for the short review, but if you've seen the movie and you loved the soundtrack, by all means buy it. It is worth your money and so much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Score! Edelman's best score!, September 18, 2002

Eldeman's score for Gettysburg captures perfectly the essence of the Civil War. He captures the bitter hatred, daunting courage, and the tragedy of the Civil War. NO other war soundtrack can truly compare to Gettysburg. The themes are powerful and full orchestrational, with period music mixed in with tracks like Fife and Gun. While listening to the score, one can almost see Chamberlain's heroic charge down Little Round top in track 3, can almost see the long gray lines march to death and immortality in track 16. You can hear the heartache and sorrow along with the small cadence of triumph of survival in the final track of the cd #18. With the possible exeption of Dragonheart, none of Edelman's score come close nearing the complexity and beauty of the Gettysburg score. It is truly one of the greatest all time scores and indeed one of the most patriotic pieces of music ever written. Buy it and you will not be dissappointed.
