The first disc is the better of the pair !, October 2, 1999
This review is from: Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Deluxe Commemorative Edition (Audio CD)
I recently purchased the box set and have enjoyed it. They have a nice colored booklet inside with photos from the movie and an overview of the battle. The music on disc #1 is quite powerful. Remember that there are only two basic musical themes to the film: and these are to be found in cuts #1 and #3. The rest of the discs play the theme songs over and over again at different volumes and speeds. The second disc is repetitive and weaker; but when Jeff Daniels reads the portion of the Gettysburg address at the end, you can close your eyes and hear him speaking to the 20th Maine in the film. Being a history teacher and having visited Gettysburg over the past summer, I loved the movie, and the soundtrack provides both easy listening and the chance to mentally replay the film everytime you see it. I recommend it.

The haunting brilliance of Gettysburg comes alive..., October 10, 1998

Randy Edelman has created one of the most beautiful, brilliant, yet haunting soundtracks ever to hit the shelves. The "original" CD is gorgeous--tears may fall during the first track. The diversity of the music, ranging from the quiet, beautiful "General Lee's Solitude" is in quite a contrast with pieces such as "Fife and Gun," and "The First Battle." For a taste of the brilliance and drive of the whole soundtrack, check out "Reunion and Finale," an incredible mixture of all the themes accented by almost deafening, driving percussion and brass.
Fans of the original Gettysburg will definately NOT be disappointed by the addition of the second CD, which features music from the film never before released. "Freemantle and Armistead" is a gorgeous composition from the very beginning. The reading of the "Gettysburg Address" by Jeff Daniels is a wonderful conclusion to the soundtrack. Accented by Edelman's score in the background, it is a very moving work.
Overall, the CD is an incredible, beautiful work, not receiving nearly the amount of credit it should...it is one of the most wonderful treasures hidden amongst the "Soundtrack" racks.

If you enjoy history you liked this movie. The soundtrack for this movie was outstanding! Being a decendent of a Civil War participant I enjoy historical recreations and this movie and its music were wonderful. The most trying time in our nations history and the music accentuated the drama, terror, heroism and even touching the moments. A wonderful 2 CD buy plus a bonus fact and fiquire booklet.
