The first disc is the better of the pair !,

This review is from: Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Deluxe Commemorative Edition (Audio CD)
I recently purchased the box set and have enjoyed it. They have a nice colored booklet inside with photos from the movie and an overview of the battle. The music on disc #1 is quite powerful. Remember that there are only two basic musical themes to the film: and these are to be found in cuts #1 and #3. The rest of the discs play the theme songs over and over again at different volumes and speeds. The second disc is repetitive and weaker; but when Jeff Daniels reads the portion of the Gettysburg address at the end, you can close your eyes and hear him speaking to the 20th Maine in the film. Being a history teacher and having visited Gettysburg over the past summer, I loved the movie, and the soundtrack provides both easy listening and the chance to mentally replay the film everytime you see it. I recommend it.

The haunting brilliance of Gettysburg comes alive...,

This review is from: Gettysburg: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Deluxe Commemorative Edition (Audio CD)
Randy Edelman has created one of the most beautiful, brilliant, yet haunting soundtracks ever to hit the shelves. The "original" CD is gorgeous--tears may fall during the first track. The diversity of the music, ranging from the quiet, beautiful "General Lee's Solitude" is in quite a contrast with pieces such as "Fife and Gun," and "The First Battle." For a taste of the brilliance and drive of the whole soundtrack, check out "Reunion and Finale," an incredible mixture of all the themes accented by almost deafening, driving percussion and brass.Fans of the original Gettysburg will definately NOT be disappointed by the addition of the second CD, which features music from the film never before released. "Freemantle and Armistead" is a gorgeous composition from the very beginning. The reading of the "Gettysburg Address" by Jeff Daniels is a wonderful conclusion to the soundtrack. Accented by Edelman's score in the background, it is a very moving work. Overall, the CD is an incredible, beautiful work, not receiving nearly the amount of credit it should...it is one of the most wonderful treasures hidden amongst the "Soundtrack" racks.

If you enjoy history you liked this movie. The soundtrack for this movie was outstanding! Being a decendent of a Civil War participant I enjoy historical recreations and this movie and its music were wonderful. The most trying time in our nations history and the music accentuated the drama, terror, heroism and even touching the moments. A wonderful 2 CD buy plus a bonus fact and fiquire booklet.

Gettysburg: Soundtrack Deluxe Commemorative Edition,

By far, this is the best soundtrack I have ever listened to. It is so meaningful and inspirational. I originally had the original 1-Disc soundtrack, but now I have the 2-Disc set and I do not know how I could have enjoyed the 1-Disc soundtrack without the 2nd disc. The 2nd Disc adds so much the soundtrack overall. I love both Discs the same. However, I think that if you only have the 1-Disc soundtrack, you need to try to find the 2-Disc set. You need both CD's. If you love the music in "Gettysburg" you need the deluxe commemorative soundtrack. It is my favorite soundtrack of all time, better then "Gods and Generals", "Gladiator", "The Patriot", "Glory", etc. I own all these soundtracks but this is the best. It would inspire anyone who listens to it.

The two CD deluxe album is one CD too many!,

First the good news. If I was rating the single CD version of this recording I would have given it a rating of five stars; the score from the motion picture is an overlooked and underplayed gem. Unfortunately I am rating the deluxe version (two CDs with illustrated pamphlet); the second CD contains selections that weren't included in the soundtrack....one listen to the second CD will make the listener painfully aware of why these selections weren't included in the the original soundtrack....they're awful. The price of the two CD Deluxe version is not worth double the price of the single CD version. The only thing I play from the second CD is Jeff Daniels' reading of the Gettysburg Address; it should have been included on the first CD. Go with the single CD version....it's worth every penny.

I have recently purchased the Deluxe Commemorative Edition and I love it! I would not have been happy with myself if I would have only gotten the one CD Now I will admit, the second CD is not as loud and flashy as the first but, it is still beautiful and it is equaly as captivating. It is truly a must-get. If you are thinking of getting one of the Gettysburg CD's but you are not sure which one, than you must go with this one. I recomend it to anyone. Please get it. I assure you that you will enjoy it!

Oh so Beautiful,

I had owned the original soundtrack for years, but had sorely missed the music that accompanied Armistead's charge toward The Angle. When I saw this album contained the track "Armistead is Hit," that was enough reason for me to buy it. Now, I can play track number 14, close my eyes, and imagine I am with Armistead as he runs toward the Federal lines. This music is so powerful, that the emotion passes through the music and inhabits your soul. I have to say that "Armistead is Hit" is my favorite piece of film music. Also very good are "Buford's decisive descision," and "Hancock and Kemper are hit." The part of the latter that follows Armistead calling for double-quick still makes me shiver. This is a very fine piece of film score, and more than worth owning.

Without a doubt, this is the most memorable movie soundtrack I've ever encountered. The most notable tracks in the first edition are 1, 4, and 18, each of which are worth buying the entire cd. When you listen to Fife and Gun, turn it up. Loud. There's nothing more spine tingling and chillingly rythmic in any synthesized orchestral composition I've ever heard. By the way, for anyone who likes that track, you've got to hear Edelman's "The Courier" 10th track on Last of the Mohicans, nearly identical and very kewl. Edelman is the absolute best. The music could be used for so much more than the movie, it conjures so many possibilities.

Sometimes one just ain't enough,

I owned the first CD of this soundtrack for several years, and loved it. Even with just the one CD, it was one of my favorite soundtracks ever. But it was missing a piece from the end, and that piece was my favorite music in the movie. So when I found this, I flipped. I love the whole thing. I admit the second disc is a little more uneven than the first, but the two songs at the end before Jeff Daniels.....thing.....make it more than worth it.

The blend of instuments is breathtaking. the sound of "Fife And Gun" is truly great to lisen to. If you have seen the movie, it makes lisining to the soundtrack truly great. I'm a big Jeff Danials fan, and lisining to him tell the "Gettysburg Address" will make your eyes water!
