Getz Au Go Go is a great Stan Getz album, including Astrud Gilberto and the young Gary Burton. According to Phil Schaap's research for the Girl From Ipanema Box set (6 lps or 4cds), Verve did record Stan with this group at the Cafe Au Go Go, at the Carnegie Hall Concert, and then also recorded this same group in the studio. What survived is the Carnegie Hall recordings and the studio recordings, not the Cafe Au Go Go recordings. Phil Schapp believes that the decision by the label for Getz Au Go GO was to use the studio recording and in "Post-Production" add audience applause to the studio tracks for this album. This does not detract from the beauty of this album, but does set the record straight.

I recently purchased this album on a 2 LP, 45 RPM audiophile record (see my review elsewhere) for nearly $70, but have discovered that this under $10 CD reissue blows it away in sound quality. Though it is hard for me to say that, being a devoted LP spinner, in this case, it is true. Unfortunately, the CD jacket gives no information or credit as to who performed the mastering on it, but whoever it was, I'd like to shake their hand! This album rates very high (for me) among Stan Getz recordings (what can I say, I love his bossa nova oriented albums), and Astrud Gilberto's vocals on several of the tracks are among her best performances. Highly recommended!

Excellent 1950's '60s Bosa Nova style with crystaline voice of Brazilian (Bahian) Astrid Gilberto. An excellent buy for anyone who is into good jazz... especially Stan Getz. My fourth and fifth copies, including the original LP I bought in the early sixties and counting those I bought and gave to friends as gifts!
