This is a fine book, but WHY is it cross-listed under "Natural Disasters"? Geysers are no more "disasters" than trees or rivers are. I don't get it.

This review is from: The Geysers of Yellowstone (Paperback)
Now in its third edition and completely revised, this geyser Bible remains the definitive guide to Yellowstone's erupting thermal features. Detailed maps of each of Yellowstone's geyser basins and colorful descriptions of every known geyser make the book both easy to read and easy to use when stalking eruptions of even the most elusive geysers. A fascinating list of all the world's other known geyser regions, many of which have suffered from geothermal development, makes the reader realize all the more what a special place Yellowstone really is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The #1 authority on geothermal features in Yellowstone., June 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Geysers of Yellowstone (Paperback)
The Geysers of Yellowstone is the most supurbly written field guide on geysers and hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. It is an invaluable resource for new and old geyser gazers alike. If one truly wishes to appreciate and understand these natural wonders, The Geysers of Yellowstone should become a part of your library.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Geyser Reference Book, April 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Geysers of Yellowstone (Paperback)
The Geysers of Yellowstone is best guide to Yellowstones thermal features I know of, but I wish it would include some of the non-eruptive hot spring and mud pots. Never the less, the book is packed with in-depth information on everything the ever erupted in Yellowstone at time. I am a Yellowstone visitor for 8 years running, and more than half this book, I still don't know! A MUST for any geyser lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide for Yellowstone geysers, and a lot more, October 3, 2003

This review is from: The Geysers of Yellowstone (Paperback)
If the phenomenon of geysers interests you, this is your book. It should be the yardstick by which all others on the subject are measured.

Superbly well organized, and written, this book readily conveys the author's enthusiasm for the subject. I would have preferred a few more color photographs in addition to the cover, but this is a minor quibble. The black and white photos are chosen carefully, and give a good idea of the feature involved.

The book discusses all known geysers in Yellowstone, which park contains a substantial majority of these features on the planet. Maps are supplied, and are easily deciphered. Data is given concerning the eruptive pattern of each geyser, where known, and this proved most helpful during a recent trip to this magnificent area.

The feature I enjoyed the most was the detailed appendix, setting forth all known geyser fields anywhere on Earth. I guarantee some of the locations and features will surprise you. The author also discuuses which of these fields are most endangered by unwise development of geothermal power.

Very, very highly recommended. Indeed, I should say it is indispensible for anyone planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for., February 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Last summer in Yellowstone National Park, I got lucky and was able to photograph several
geysers as they erupted. I didn't know which geysers were worth waiting for or even how
long I could expect to wait. The geysers I got to photograph were pure luck, I was next
to them when they erupted. This book provides detailed information about what is known
about each of the geysers in Yellowstone. Size, duration, interval, trails leading to
these geysers, as well as the best place to view many of these geysers. I purchased
this book right after I made reservations for this summer.

The price of the book from Amazon was several dollars less expensive than if I had purchased
it directly from the Yellowstone Association.

Another book with great information about the waterfalls in Yellowstone national Park is...
The Guide to Yellowstone Waterfalls and Their Discovery by Paul Rubinstein.
This book proved to be very useful last year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for geyser lovers, January 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've been to Yellowstone 12 times and the most recent trip was our first to explore some of the back-country thermal basins. This book is a fascinating read and it is amazingly comprehensive.

We are already planning our next trip and now that we have read this book we feel much better prepared to enjoy the unique experience of geyser watching. We have some favorites to see again and will make more day hikes to see geysers and hot springs that are off the beaten path.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Choice For 2010, August 30, 2010

This is an outstanding book, and it is really difficult to add anything to what the other 5 star reviewers have already said.

This book is especially helpful during the current national recession. Nobody can afford to travel to Europe any more. As I found out last month, the western National Parks are totally packed out with people. A first class guidebook with detailed information on what to look for is exactly what the well prepared traveler needs.

But despite how helpful this book was for last month's trip, I especially appreciated the candid discussion on the near-demise of New Zealand's once "second only to Yellowstone" geyser fields. How that country could consider geothermal projects more important than such an important tourist attraction is a mystery. There may well be good reasons for tourists to consider visiting New Zealand. But for those of us with a special interest in geysers, the motivation is gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Geysers Are A Hot Topic, July 15, 2010
I was fortunate enough to have taken geology from Scott Bryan at Victor Valley College in California in the early 1980s. We were required, after all, to take a lab science. Bryan is a shy and modest man who has the ability to relate hard core science in a relaxed, easy going manner. He writes the same way. I've taken this book with me on Yellowstone trips, where Scott Bryan worked as a seasonal employee for many years. I consider it indispensable to anyone who is serious about understanding the breathtaking beauty of Yellowstone and how it was formed. The text is straightforward and readable and covers topics such as magma extrusion, opal formation and mineral delineation.
If you are planning a trip to Yellowstone, if you are interested in rock collecting or geology in any form, you'll benefit from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars If geysers interest you at all, this is a must., May 10, 2010
I borrowed this book from the library before heading out on my most recent trip to Yellowstone, knowing that I was interested primarily in the geysers. I bought my own copy our second day at the park, mostly because when we got there on the first day the bookstore was closed. I took it everywhere in the park and in more than one picture from the trip I'm reading it.

The information in the book is well laid out, providing details on each geyser in a concise manner. The geysers are divided into areas and then groups, making it easy to find the relevant section. At the start of each group, there's a map showing locations relative to landmarks and a table containing useful information like the geyser name, how long the intervals between eruptions are, how long eruptions last, and how high the eruptions can be. There's then at least a paragraph for each geyser (and depending on the geyser, sometimes a lot more!) with more detailed information about the eruptions, potential cycles, the geyser's relationship to other geysers, and parts of the history. The text is well written and an entertaining read. I find it enjoyable still to pick up and thumb through - there's always something I missed - and it keeps my interest high while I'm waiting for my next visit to the park.

The appendix contains information about geyser fields around the world, although the detail is understandably less. Because of this book, I was able to see many, many more geysers erupt than I would have otherwise - multiple times during my visit we caught warning signs that were highlighted in the text and so were able to catch the eruption that we otherwise would have missed, having passed on by. If you're at all curious about geysers or have any kind of interest in seeing them, this book is an absolute necessity and absolutely worth it.
