A solid, readable biography,

Content Summary: A summary of the life of Abdul Ghaffar Khan, born 1890, and died 1988. Ghaffar Khan was the little-known ally of Gandhi, a non-violent Muslim, also known as the "Frontier Gandhi." After the partition of India he was left without friend, without allies, and without Gandhi to aid him. Resisting both the British and the Pakistanis non-violently, he spent up to 27 years or more in prison for his pursuit of Pakthun autonomy, peace, and nonviolence.
Analytical Review: From my point of view, Abdul Ghaffar Khan could truly be called a hero of Islam. Though his viewpoint was similar, but not identical to Gandhi's, Abdul Ghaffar Khan (AGK) believed in a universal perspective of religion, and in the pursuit of a more loving, peaceful world. He paid dearly in prison for that. Rajmohan Gandhi has written a solid biography of AGK, not a comprehensive as Tendulkar's large book, and perhaps not as colorful or filled with such illustrative quotes and pixels of vital information as Eknath Easwaran's book. It is, however, a very readable and engaging portrait of Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and one I could recommend. |
