Excellent and highly recommended,

This review is from: Ghashiram Kotwal (Hardcover)
This play is one of the best by Tendulkar. It is a brilliant analysis of the corrupt state of affairs of a state and its slipping towards immorality. Although the folk-songs form a major part of the play, they seem slightly irritating at times, but I guess, it was essential to maintain its tie to the historical time frame when the story actually takes place. The play is about Ghasiram who becomes the Kotwal of Pune city by offering his daughter to the Prime Minister of Peshwas. The city degenerates into a slightly modern form of Sodom and Gomorrah under the rule of the venal upper castes and their minions. The play was highly controversial in its time as most of the Tendulkar plays have been. All in all, thought-provoking, brilliant and enjoyable.
