Editorial Reviews

Tom Morello and Boots Riley joined forces to form Street Sweeper Social Club in 2009. Following the group's critically acclaimed, self-titled debut album, SSSC will release the Ghetto Blaster EP. The new release features seven new recordings, including two songs that have become fan favorites during their blistering live sets: covers of MIA's "Paper Planes," and LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out." The EP also features a new, extended version of their single, "Promenade," which highlights an explosive and unique guitar solo that validates Morello's status as a real, live Guitar Hero.

I first heard about SSSC when they were performing with Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction in spring 2009. They had 2 songs available on a free sample download for the tour. I liked those songs even better than the ones for the headlining bands. They rocked very hard. So when they came out with their first self-titled album, I ordered it the day it was released. I wasn't disappointed and it's been on my favorites list on my ipod ever since.
This E.P. proves the first album wasn't a fluke.
Tom Morello's guitar skills and music teamed with Boots Riley's lyrics and voice are a winning combination if you like serious rock. It's political,it's social commentary, it's loud, angry, funny and clever, and most of all, it rocks.
The E.P. starts out strong with it's title track and never slows down. My favorite song is song number four so far. It's Boots at his best, making comparisons and observations in rapid fire lyrics.
I love what these two do together. Morello writes the music, and Riley writes the lyrics. If you haven't heard anything by Boots Riley before, he's the voice of political hip-hop group The Coup. Morello has been in a few groups with his amazing guitar skills, but my favorite is Rage Against the Machine. His playing on this album is more like RATM than like Audioslave. It's driving, rocking, screaming, talking guitar.
My favorite songs on the album, if I have to narrow it down to what I'd recommend for people who just want to try it first, are the title track, track 4, and the remake of Promenade.
I like the original songs by them best, but there are two covers on this album. The cover of Mama Said Knock You Out is a hard rocking take on LL Cool Jay's song. The cover of M.I.A.'s Paper Planes is extremely well done and showcases Riley's voice in a good way.
ETA: As Scott Mcclure points out in the comments, Everythang is a cover as well. It was originally a song by The Coup with a shiny new guitar track by Morello.

Street Sweeper Social Club follow up last years self titled debut album with this mini album/ep "The Ghetto Blaster" and the good news is if you enjoyed that funk filled album this ep continues on from that, made up of new tracks a few cover versions and one reworked song, hopefully this is a quick stop gap before a full new album.

On the 2009 NIN/JA(nine inch nails & jane's addiction)tour Street Sweeper Social Club were the opening act and as well as their own material they performed a number of cover versions that were not available to buy anywhere, the most famous of these was their version of M.I.A's "Paper Planes"(which sampled the clash song straight to hell) which had people talking about the magic of Tom Morello's amazing guitar work and it's evident here that there's not too many guitarists who could pull it off and its really his guitar work on this song that stands out. They also performed a version of LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" which doesn't sound anything like the original but is definitely funk filled take in the Street Sweeper Social Club way. The other cover is a version of Boots Reily's own band The Coup "Everythang".

One of the best songs on their debut album was Promenade, however the live version was that bit extra special as it featured vintage Morello guitar work at the end of the song and to keep their fans happy they have now done a studio version with the extra guitar work at the end, after listening to this version you will see why people prefer this version. The 3 new songs all folow the funk filled sound of the first album, new track "The New F*** You" starts of sounding like the Gossip track "Standing In The Way Of Control" before being taken over by Boot's rhyming over a big Morello riff.

Street Sweeper Social Club is a new venture that consists of RATM/Audioslave guitar phenom Tom Morello and musician, vocalist, writer, and public speaker most known for being the front man and producer of The Coup, Boots Riley.

As usual Tom brings his seemingly endless array of guitar expressions and sonic creativity. That coupled with Boots' winding and sometimes furious lyrical dialect produces a funk-tastic sound for the old RAMT/Audioslave/Night Watchman fans and yet still fresh enough for even fans of other genres.

"Promenade" is currently my favorite song off the EP. The thumping bass guitar start sets the tempo for the power driven polical vemon that Boots lays down. But my hands down favorite part is always Tom's furious solo at the end. He seems to spin it right out into the universe to bring it right back and smack you in the face.

Very good album. I look forward to seeing more of these guys in the future.
