still time for improvement, but overall a pretty good effort,
By Markit Taylor (new york) - See all my reviews

overall a good effort, not much that you can say about the man who nobody really knows about. the def squads first and seems to be only rnb talent in the camp comes out strong on his debut.hollister, a former member of the rnb male quadrant blackstreet, spun solo after there 1994 self-titled effort, to make this album. featuring the smash singles "my favorite girl" & the overally explicit, but fabulous "babymammadramma", show that hollister, plans to stay around for a bit longer. the rest of the album though really doesnt add up to the success of his singles. "i keep forgetting", "can't stay", & "my favorite girl" (remix) are really good tracks, and i like it. the rest are just averagae songs, songs that i like, and some that i don't like but overall a really good effort. with just a little bit of improvement, i see this man going far.

Powerful vocals, and raw lyrics express love and heartbreak,

He is the voice of the Blackstreet hit "Before I Let You Go," but he is also the singer who detailed his "Babymamadrama" in a song. On his solo debut, Ghetto Hymns, former Blackstreet singer Dave Hollister seems comfort-able singing ballad R&B notes or ghetto hip-hop lyrics. This album features gospel, pop and rap inspired tracks. Songs such as "I Can't Stay," a powerful ballad, "My Favorite Girl" and a slowed down r&B remake of the Michael McDonald classic "I Keep Forgetting" make this album music to remember.

Deep Down Raw,

This cd is not for everybody, it is explicit and brutally raw. If that is the mood you are in than this is for you. The lyrics are great to sing and the music feels good down to your toes.

TASTE AND SEE!,

AFTER THE FIRST TIME I HEARD D.H'S ALBUM I WENT OUT THE SAME DAY AND BOUGHT IT. I WAS JUST THAT IMPRESSED. DAVE'S ALBUM FOCUSES ON THE WHOLE RELATIONSHIP SAGA AND ITS SO NICELY DONE. I COMPARE THE ALBUM WITH A NICELY WRITTEN SHORT STORY. THIS ALBUM HAS CHARACTER(S), PLOT, THEME,AND STYLE. SOME OF THE SAME THINGS THAT MAKE A GOOD BOOK GOOD MAKES A AUDIO/NOVEL EVEN BETTER. AND DAVE CAN REALLY SING. GOOD JOB DAVE, YOU GOT A FAN FOR LIFE!

If you like Intro, early Jodeci, or Dru Hill ballads then you should dig this album. Smooth R&B with enough hip-hop flavor to satisfy fans of both.

DAVE HOLLISTER NEW ALBUM, JUST OOZES WITH CLASS. HE REALLY HAS DONE HIM SELF A FAVOUR BY LEAVING BLACKSTREET AFTER THERE FIRST PLAYER. I HOPE THIS ALBUM DROPS AND SELLS AS MANY AS IT SHOULD, DAVE REALLY CAN SING. HIS SONGS MAINTAIN THAT R AND B FEEL WITH A LACING OF NU CLASSIC SOUL. WATCH OUT TEDDY....DAVES ARRIVED ...THE NEW KING OF R AND B. THE BOMB FOR '99. **DONT MISS THIS C.D****

Ghetto Hymns is food for the soul, and beats for the booty!,

This review is from: Ghetto Hymns [Edited] (Audio CD)
Dave Hollister has surprised the heck out of me with this incredible foray of modern soul and R&B.Ghetto Hymns is incredibly powerful vocally, lyrically, and musically. The whole production is tight, smooth, cool and totally sophisticated. Hollister dishes up food for the soul, and beats for the booty. I'm not going to name them all but faves among the set are "Favorite Girl, Call Me, and Feelin's". Hollister proves himself as a talent with or without Blackstreet. Trust me, this album is special. Do yourself a favor and check it out!

From a Man's Point of view,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ghetto Hymns (Audio CD)
Hi there, this album is so deep it's scary. I love this album because Dave has shown how versatile he can be. Not only letting his voice do the buisiness on the love songs but he told the stoy from a man's prospective on Baby Mama Drama, it's kind of funny cause you know it aint real but it actually happens!I also love the little spanish type track, that really gets me moving - keep it up Dave it's been worth the wait!

Very nice, with room for improvement,

What really got me open off of this CD was the fact that I saw Erick Sermons name on it. That was enough to get me to shell out the fifteen. When I listened to it I was very impressed by Daves voice, he really has a bright future. The album is very solid w/ only a few rough spots keeping it from achieving the five-star. I was hoping that there would be more songs in the same genre as Babymamadrama. The song has to be one of my all time favorites, with its laid back funk beat and gospel type lyrics. Sadly there wasn't a song on the album reminiscent of BMD. There were however plenty of slow tracks that you can get your girl wet to, so I am not complaining. Overall this is a good disc for your car, the bachelors pad or the love nest. Can't wait til' the next release from Dave, hopefully there will be a few more E. Sermon cuts. peace.

Definitive 21st Century R&B,

Hats off to Dave Hollister. This is definitive R&B to lead us into the 21st Century. As a jazzer, I can really appreciate the beautiful musicality with which this CD was created. It grooves really hard while adding some very refreshing melodic and harmonic dimensions, too. And Dave Hollister is speaking a profoundly deep and complete truth about ghetto life and life in general. Kudos, Dave.
