Editorial Reviews

At the age of 19, Urban Mystic, an up-and-coming singer/songwriter/producer from Fort Lauderdale, FL, is in the midst of redefining contemporary R&B with the release of his debut album, Ghetto Revelations. Urban Mystic's name reflects the combination of luscious vocals and street flair present on his sultry tracks. He's poised to resurrect the rhythm that is undeniably absent from today's rhythm and blues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive, December 2, 2004
By
Gerald "book and music junkie" (El Cerrito, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghetto Revelations (Audio CD)
I first saw Urban Mystic on Soul Train about a month ago, and was immediately impressed with the maturity of his music and voice for a 19 year old. His voice is very similar to K-Ci (from Jodeci/K-Ci and JoJo, who he mimics a few melodies from. "Ah Yeah" reminds me of "Life" from the Life movie soundtrack, actually.)But his subject matter is more attuned to a Calvin Richardson or Anthony Hamilton. In other words, he falls into the NeoSoul category, but with an appeal beyond the local poetry coffee shop.

It would be a crime if the first single, "Where Were You" (a song meant to invoke memories of the best times in your own life) doesn't propel his album to Gold status.

There are six other songs on here that could have easily been the first single, including "Givin' It Up," a song about a man maturing to the point where he places his relationship with a woman over his less productive social activities. Another is my favorite song on the album - "Satisfied," which can be played in the club, the bedroom, the coffee shop, or even at a social event for your parents. It's just good music.

The album ends on the perfect note, with "Mama's Song," a personal song to his mother that is as honest as music gets.

So why 4 stars and not five? Well, a few songs feel out of place on this album. "F***k Song" comes after three songs about dedicating himself to a solid relationship. And "Watch Out" sounds like it should be on a Nelly album (literally) rather than on this one. I get the impression that someone told him that he had to put a song like this on the record. It sounds like your typical Destiny's Child "only good for 1 month in the club and then to the used rack" type song. If you like that style of R&B, you won't have any complaints.

Note that he does a much better job with "light" subject matter on the songs "Gotta Get You Home" and "Shopping Spree."

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Treasure, October 25, 2005

This review is from: Ghetto Revelations (Audio CD)
Man------ I am truly impressed with these new school kats with dat ole school vocal power. And I can't think of anybody, not even R. Kelly who could sing an explicit song like the F**k song and make it sound as innocent as he did with this song. And not everyone can do remakes but his take on the classic Bobby Womack, What A Woman's Needs fills any prescription. He does an exceptional job, while he changes one of the verse's delivery to add new flava to the song. There are many more tasteful musical tracks with delightful accompanying deep vocals on Mystic's debut. What is so errie, is the fact that many tracks are sexual in nature but have a sensual non-sexual appeal. Actually doesn't make it seem as dirty as it sounds. That may sound twisted but he has the ability to walk a fine line without turning your stomach. Really looking forward to his follow-up, but for now I am really enjoying this joint. I hope these Kat's Like Lyfe, Mystic, Anthony Hamilton and others will someday do a collabo. It would be nice to hear their vocals together. Expect to listen straight through. This is one of those joints with pure hotnessssssssss. Get This! No Disappointment! Peace......

5.0 out of 5 stars WELCOME TO TRUE R&B SOUND, March 23, 2005
This review is from: Ghetto Revelations (Audio CD)
We just bought this cd last night after my husband saw Urban Mystiq on Soul Train and hey! this young brother put it down, he's a mixture of Calvin Richardson and Anthony Hamilton. I love his soulful, bluesy R&B sound, who are the A&R people that are supposed to let the public know about these great artists, right along with Joe, Calvin and Anthony, another brother not getting his props! We look forward to the next album.
