My First Nikki Turner Original,
By
This review is from: Ghetto Superstar: A Novel (Many Cultures, One World) (Paperback)
Well let me say I was a little apprehensive when I picked it up because I read one of the reviews that was not favorable at all. But since I am one to have to see it for myself I picked up the book and I am glad I did. Now the reviewer did have some valid points that I saw as I read the book.
The Pros: 1.She is an excellent story teller. 2.She know how to make the characters come to life and have distinct personalities. 3. She kept you into the story(most of the time). 4. The main character in this book did have some self respect and that was the best part of the book. The Cons: 1. Why is the main character always so damn flawless almost all the time. I just don't get it. Not a scratch on her. She's always superwoman. She always have 10 lives she gets shot up, beat up and thrown out windows and still walking around looking like "Beyonce". Imma need to see a brokedown !itch get her turn in a book. My bad i'm babbling on. Just a vent. I just read too many books with the same chick. I saying to myself i know this chick is tired from showing up in all these books. Please somebody let the chick take a break. 2. 50 more pages and she could have wrapped the ish up and been done with the story. I don't think it warrants another book. But hey who am I. Just a reader! Thanks you Ms. Turner for an interesting read. I will be recommending this one and reading the second part. One

Mama, I wanna sing...,
This review is from: Ghetto Superstar: A Novel (Many Cultures, One World) (Paperback)
Fabiola Mays is a superstar waiting to be discovered. Her mom has the tenacity and business savvy to help her further her career and her sister can make a stack of brown paper bags into a fashion line. This trio personifies the whole package. Encouraged by her mom and sister, Fabiola is working and giving it everything she has to attain that fame and fortune that is within her grasp. Working with Ricky Chunnaly's band, she accepts his unfair treatment because she gets exposure with his gigs.
Fabiola wins a contest in New York City that includes a $50,000 grand prize and a $150,000 record contract with Hot Soundz. When the trio attempt to collect the prize money, they are met at the door of Hot Soundz with the news that the company's assets have been frozen by the IRS, so they return home penniless and disillusioned. To make matters worse, the landlord is there to evict them, and now they have nowhere to go and no money. Luck happens to be across the street in the form of an old gangster named Casino, who offers them a place to stay with no strings attached. This Nikki Turner original is a mediocre read. In reading Ghetto Superstar, I kept waiting for some excitement and some interesting drama, but unfortunately Ms. Turner never delivered. The relationship between Fabiola and Casino needed more development to indicate a physical attraction or chemistry. Editing problems throughout the novel didn't help the situation either. The ending was like a magic trick that the magician pulls out of a hat...puzzling. Overall, I found the storyline in Ghetto Superstar lackluster at best. Reviewed by Tazzyt2bossye for Urban Reviews

Fantasy or Urban Fiction? Hmmmm confused!,
By Shoe Princess (Midwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghetto Superstar: A Novel (Many Cultures, One World) (Paperback)
I always look forward to reading a Nikki Turner book, however the last few have not been captivating, entertaining, or written well. Parts of Ghetto Superstar read like a Disney movie, which truly does not do it for me when reading an urban tale. So many parts of the book were simply too unrealistic even for Nikki. As a reader I felt the entire story was forced. I had to force myself to read it and truthfully it didn't become interesting until the last 60-75 pages...up until that point I was just reading because I was waiting on someone or something. Once I put the book down it never called me back-so I ended up throwing it in my purse just in case. It took me nearly three weeks to complete the book, which is rare. Normally I would have filed it in the I can't do this book section to loan out. But because it was Nikki I wanted to give Ghetto Superstar the benefit of the doubt. The ending was cool, however I can certainly understand why most as in the majority of readers HATED IT. The foundation for the ending was forced and subtle therefore many didn't and won't pick up on what was planted to set up the actual ending. I understood and caught all therefore I was able to understand and appreciate the ending. However, I must agree with the majority another few pages and a sequel wouldn't be necessary.
On a good note those of you interested in the music industry may like parts of the book. I did find the main character, Fabiola, of high moral standards, which is rare in urban fiction books and pretty much in the real world and especially in the music industry. Casino also known as *Captain Save a Ho* is a cool character but his role in the beginning of the story was pure foolishness...drug dealers don't just appear out the sky or down the block no matter how rich or cool they are to save nobody but their own folks from eviction....What drug dealer big or small will go to war with the Sheriff or police over folk they don't even know getting put out...THE ANSWER IS NONE. Enough said because I can go on forever about this book. A GREAT MANUAL FOR WHAT NOT TO DO IN AND TO YOUR STORY. I would blame her editor but the editor has to have something good to make great otherwise there's not much that can be done. Hopefully her next book will be better because it broke my heart to have to give Nikki Turner a review of this magnitude but each one teach one and no one is above learning.

It had a very nice flow, but then at times I was a little confused about so many people having sooo many secrets especially when Fab withheld the robbery from Casino, she's suppose to be a straight up shooter with him. But anyway great writing good characters and not so good ending cause I can't wait until the sequel!! now that really threw me for a loop I hope it's as exciting or better

The last couple of Nikki Turner novels I was not feeling. But Ms. Turner redeemed herself with this one!! I loved it!!!
Fabiola Mays has been singing since she was a little girl. Her mother Viola and sister Adora are her biggest fans. Fabiola learns that everything that glitters is not gold after facing hardships in her personal life and career. When Fabiola wins a singing competition she thinks her dreams are coming true...only the company sponsoring the contest is bankrupt and there is no prize!!! Fabiola and her family return to VA only to be evicted. Local hustler/businessman Casino Winn comes to their rescue and allows the Mays to live rent free in one of his homes (for 3 years!!). When Casino is shot and expected to never walk again, Fabiola reaches out to the man who saved her in her time of need. They develop a genuine friendship and he becomes one of Fab's biggest supporters. But the road to the top is never easy and Fabiola may soon find out that her success and talent is not appreciated by everyone!!! This book was sooooo good to me I read it in 2 days!! I am hoping for a sequel because that ending left me with many questions!!

I only gave the book three stars because that's what it was. Com on , I know this ia a bok written on fiction, but hey you could've come a little realier than that. Fairtale books are for children, not for grown ups. So take this peice of advice for your next one & get a little more creative becuause Kiki Swinson & Deja King is tearing you down in books. So watch your back!
