5.0 out of 5 stars This had to be the best book I ever read in my life!
This book was very scary. Nancy is searching this old mansion and when they(Nancy,Bess, andGeorge) hear organ playing they look to see a mysterious figure. They try to get a closer look, but then it disappears. It was my absolute favorite!

1.0 out of 5 stars author had not a clue
I'm a librarian and decided to reread all the old Nancy Drew books of my youth. This one, so far, is the worst. The plot is ridiculous and all over the place with unbelievable characters and situations (following wheelbarrow "tracks"? psychic wands? a confusing hotel/letter drop-off scenario?). I understand many different people authored the series under the fake...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Carolyne Keene, March 17, 2000
This review is from: The Ghost of Blackwood Hall (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 25) (Hardcover)
This book is about swindlers who swindle innocent people by posing to be connected with the spirit world. They hold up seances, and hypnotize women into doing absolutely foolish things which often get their lives in danger.Nancy Drew picks up their trail but these people are far too much clever. But she doesn't lose hope and clears up the mystery at last. This book keeps changing with every chapter with new developments on the case. This book is the best of all the others I have read of this author. A perfectly thrilling mystery.

Hey, if youre looking for something really cool and very thrilling, why not read Carolyn Keenes The Ghost Of Blackwood Hall with the super sleuth Nancy Drew. In the story, she was determined to solve a case of an old client involving some jewelry thievery and later on, it was complicated with a ghost playing on an organ in a dark, old mansion. She was also been assigned to study the cases of 3 working ladies for they are giving and donating money on a crook company. The very interesting part in the story is that when Nancy, with her friends George and Bess, first went to the old mansion. Come on, share the thrill and go on screaming when you read this wonderfull stuff. thanks!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Fast-paced Mystery, May 24, 2003

This review is from: The Ghost of Blackwood Hall (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 25) (Hardcover)
This review concerns the original 1948 edition as well as the revised 1967 edition which is a shorter version of the original. A widow seeks Nancy's help after she is robbed of a fortune in jewels. It seems the woman's deceased husband's spirit instructed her to bury the jewels in the forest to prevent them from being stolen from her home. Nancy is certain that the woman is the victim of a clever group of swindlers. Her investigation puts her into contact with several young women who are being cheated out of their hard-earned paychecks and leads her to abandoned Blackwood Hall. There, Nancy encounters an eerie, glowing ghost that inhabits the mansion. This is definately one of the best Nancy Drew books. The mystery is interesting and the story is fast-paced and well-written with lots of action. I really enjoyed the middle chapters, particularly the first two times Nancy investigates Blackwood Hall and meets the ghost. The whole book is great and a must-read for fans of the series.

This review is from: The Ghost of Blackwood Hall (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 25) (Hardcover)
Nancy Drew's latest case starts when she's approached by a woman named Mrs Putnam who has a very strange tale to share. Apparently the spirit of Mrs Putnam's husband advised her to take her valuables and bury them under a walnut tree in the woods. Though she followed his instructions, Mrs Putnam later came to regret this decision and went back to fetch them - but on taking them to the jeweler to be cleaned, she's informed that the jewels are forgeries.

Mrs Putnam refuses to go to the police because of her deceased husband's instructions not to tell any man or woman. Seeing a loophole, her jeweler brings her to Nancy; who is neither man nor woman, but an eighteen year-old girl, and Nancy naturally agrees to look into the mystery. Her investigation leads her to suspect that a racketeering operation is in business, extorting young women and old ladies out of their money by convincing them that the spirits want them to donate to a phony charity. This involves a "cloak and dagger" operation in which girls are instructed to leave money behind in hollow trees, women are escorted to anonymous séances hosted by spirits, and people are invited to have their photographs taken on film which may include "spirit messages."

It's an intriguing premise with a dark, creepy mood that permeates the entire story, particularly when Nancy is investigating Blackwood Hall or the surrounding woods. There are also a few chapters set in New Orleans that make the most of that city's rich history and atmosphere. The "ghostly" Nancy Drew mysteries always seem to be the best ones, and this one certainly isn't short on eerie occurrences, such as organ-playing ghosts, smoking cabins without any fire, talking portraits and hypnotized girls (my copy of this included a pencil illustration of a girl walking into a river with her arms outstretched in front of her like a zombie; when I was younger I had a nightmare about it).

There are some interesting features to "Blackwood Hall" that differentiate it from the usual formula. In a couple of effective chapters, Nancy goes missing and Bess and George are the protagonists of the narrative until she's found again. On the other hand, there are several components that are repeated throughout this series, such as Nancy foregoing common sense and self-preservation in order to investigate matters, and a clumsy wrap-up in which the villains monologue extensively on their crimes for no apparent reason.

But ultimately that's what to be expected from a Nancy Drew book. These days, there's a certain amount of enjoyment to be derived from the nostalgic quality of the books' settings, yet at the same time there is still a freshness about Nancy and her "chums" that made me forget sometimes that Nancy has to wait around for letters to be delivered because email hasn't been invented yet, or that she can't simply call for help on her cell-phone for the same reason.

All in all, one of the better Nancy Drew mysteries, particularly in its spooky subject matter.
