After 14 years, they're still the best band I've ever heard.,
By
This review is from: Ghost of Cain (Audio CD)
This album is still at the top of the list in terms of best all around CD. There's not one song on there not worth listening to.All of the songs of "Ghost of Cain" pack power and punch along with both rebellious and intelligent thought behind it. As a testament to their music, I know of two metal bands that have done covers of "Hunt" and do it justice. If I had to put New Model Army's music into a little box and label it, it'd be right there in "Songs to Start Your Own Revolution To". I've listened to NMA for 14 years now and I was lucky enough to see them in their US tour some 10 years ago. I can honestly say that they are more powerful live and in person than in any CD recording you've ever heard. In that performance in Berekeley, Ca. they played "Hunt", "51st State" and "Master Race" and drove the crowd insane. Buy it, they're an addiction.

One heck of an album!,
By Amanda Parnell (University of Wyoming) - See all my reviews

I first was exposed to New Model Army as an exchange student in Germany. Although there is much music like this to be found in Europe, in America, this kind of sound has almost disappeared from the wide spread of music we find on the radio and in popular music stores. This is real honest-to-god music with all its rage, passion and individual voice driving your soul. This music begs you to understand political and social wrongs towards the *individual* and makes you actually *think* for a change, something that's hard to find in a world full of Backstreet Boys and Brittany Spears. New Model Army performs truly awesome music that can't be matched by any other artist.

Brilliant.,

This was the album that first got me seriously into NMA. Granted, I haven't heard all of their albums yet (and there are a lot to go around!), but so far this is my favourite one. I love its themes as well as its musical creativity; the songs are the type that touch you in an almost heartbreaking way. Very thoughtful and heartfelt, reminiscent of early U2 but perhaps even better. It's also one of those rare albums where I actually like just about every song on it. Definitely a masterpiece.

Better than "best of" cds!,

If a person listens to that album not knowing anything about new model army, he could misunderstand this album as one of the "best of" albums that are remixed-remastered. No, hell no, this album is just an album, NMA's best album, and it totally is worth being in any rock collection. The album is said to have a two-discs edition too, featuring new and live songs. I'd be really happy if they release it again.

One of the Best Album's Ever,
This review is from: Ghost of Cain (Audio CD)
The Ghost of Cain is "Rubber Soul," and Thunder & Consolation is "Sgt. Pepper". New Model Army never toured America due to Visa problems and therefore are virtually unkown in the states. But if you lived in Europe in the eighties, this group was manmouth. They were, and are, the alternative version of Metallica. I've recently listened to this album again and was suprised to realize that the sound didn't sound dated at all. Even though the lyrics are based on Cold War issues, songs like "51st State," (In reference to England being the 51st state of America) is as relative now as it was 20 years ago. This group is, without a doubt, a true hidden treasure.

When this album first came out I wanted so much to see the band live sporting my mohawk, torn jeans, and leather jacket. They were banned from the US because of their 51st state of America song. It's funny how nothing really changes with politics and that as Reagan and Bush Sr. were reaping havoc across the world with trading arms with Iran/Iraq and Bin Laden I was wearing out this album on the turn table with my bratty college angst going to every demonstration against government policy that I could. Well, the album is as crisp today both politically and sonically and just goes to show that thoughtful songwriting will always be timeless to the next generation that discovers it. The 51st state song rings true with the Bush/Blair fiasco. Thanks for releasing this on CD as my beer soaked album has long been trashed and most likely jetisoned out of my apartment window at some point in some maddened frenzy when it finally refused to play. Unfortunately, I've grown older and can't get the same effect flinging a Brittany Spears album out the window. I have since bought a few of the bands other cd's, but none hold as dear as this one because of the timing it came out and my drunken college stupor filled with confusion, radicalsim, and flat out despise for all the politicians that rule our lives in their own best interest. So put on this album, get pissed of, and band together as human beings to peacefully change our government and all it's bad foreign policies that reak havoc on the poor of other countries.

All the other six reviews are utterly correct. If there's anything wrong with this album, it's that it's over too soon. No missteps, no bad songs, no afterthoughts, no filler -- all passion, all anger, all love, all perfectly composed and performed. Double this up with 1988's THUNDER AND CONSOLATION and you'll never turn on a pop station again.

Passionate raw energy is the best way to discribe this cd. With tracks like "The Hunt" and "Master Race" you feel the need to do something about the injsutices of the world. If you're tired of bubble gum music and want something with substance, get this cd.

Most Insightful and Eye Opening Lyrical Compostion in Music,
By A Customer
This review is from: Thunder & Consolation (Audio CD)
This album is full of Insightful and Eye opening Lyrics that challenge one's scope of reality. Justin Sullivan (singer) certainly is well educated and very wise to dark side of our western culture. Be prepared to think when you hear this one. If you dont want to think, keep listening to Jewl, and friends....

In Your Face Reality Check!,
By cjlancour@csupomona.edu (Los Angels, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghost of Cain (Audio CD)
This album is filled w/ powerful lyrics that demand of us a look at the darker sinister aspect of our western culture. It also, in further study, can callenge us to review our own involvement in western culture, is it selfish?, have we too been fooled into believeing these truths set in our minds by the grand masters of marketing? This alum brings to light the concept that with all great power, there is need for great responsablity. Do you have the wisdom to wield the mighty power of modern knowledge? Does our Government? These and more are some of the ideas protrayed in this compostion. (please forgive the spelling)
