From a parent's point of view, Will Hobbs has another hit,

First off, this review will be somewhat biased as Mr. Hobbs was a teacher of mine three years in a row. If the love of reading is a fire, Mr Hobbs is the spark. He kindled the desire to read in countless children during his years as a teacher, partly because he knew us so well, and that is what makes him such a terrific author in his current work- he knows what will get kids to read and keep them reading. My children both read his books, and I read most everything that they read, just to stay in touch with what they are doing. I actually enjoy reading Mr. Hobbs' books as much as they do, the characters are real, the experiences are fresh, and the stories are enough to make me dream of my own youth. I recently moved to the Seattle area, and have explored the area in which Ghost Canoe is set. Mr. Hobbs has done a marvelous job of capturing the mood and mystery of this beautiful corner of our world. His portrayl of the Macaw tribe is true to life (as it was) and helps shed some light on the recent events in their tribe. That alone makes this book a great read for just about any preteen.

A chapter a night, that's all it takes. With the punch of London's "White Fang" or Gary Paulsen's "Winterdance", Hobbs' "Ghost Canoe" has captured the imaginations of my seven and nine year-old children. The historical and cultural lessons are a bonus for the kids (and me) in this fast-paced action adventure. Indians, war canoes, whales, robbers, shipwrecks, lighthouses and more, it's all stuff kids and their Dad's will love. Having grown up in the Northwest and being familiar with many of the locations, this book was especially fun for me.

Ghost Canoe,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ghost Canoe (Hardcover)
Ghost Canoe is an awesome adventure and mystery rolled in to one story. The unique setting and the suspense of the story keep you very anxious to read on. You will never want to put it down! I liked the way the author included the Makah Indian Tribe in it. I also enjoyed the way Lighthouse George talked in the Makah Indian language. "Hyas clutus, Tenas Mac, it is very bad." That was my favorite quote in the book because that is what made Nathan want to go into the woods to look for clues. Also that made Nathan find the canoe in the woods, which was my favorite part. When you want a good book to read, check out Ghost Canoe by Will Hobbs!

Well read by Boyd Gaines with eerie sound effects, this is an exciting tale of a boy's coming-of-age among a community of First People. With his lighthouse-keeper father & loving mother he lives a year on the edge of America where the Makah Nation, a vital seafaring people, ply their fantastic canoes, fishing & whale hunting. Here too, white traders & treasure hunters bring in their foreign ways. Marvelous descriptions of this wild area, thrilling canoe trips, fascinating insights into customs & bravery...

Ghost Canoe,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ghost Canoe (Paperback)
Ghost Canoe is about a fourteen-year-old boy named Nathan MacAllister. After the ship named the Burnaby sunk, no one thought there were any survivors, though there were footprints, stolen goods, and a murdered captain. Nathan thought otherwise. After a series of events, he realizes that the murderer was actually in the village and that a sole survivor existed. At the end of the book, Kane, the survivor, died because of his greed for a treasure he was pursuing the entire time. I loved this book because it is great historical fiction novel, it is exciting, and it is a mystery.
This book is a historical fiction novel because it describes the history and geography of the Pacific Northwest. It outlines information on the Indian tribes that live near the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It also describes what it was like to live in the unsettled area of Washington state during the late 1800`s. The area was mainly populated by Indians and a few pioneers of that era. The lighthouse on Tatoosh Island, near the strait, is the setting for the story. It was refurbished in 1874 to attract a family to keep the light burning, which is where Nathan's father worked. It still stands today. This book is very exciting and kept my attention. I wondered if there were any survivors from the shipwreck. After learning a survivor existed, I wondered why he killed the captain and remained in the area. When a letter, from the captain's brother, hinted at a treasure, I realized why the survivor stayed in the village. A man matching Kane's description was mentioned in the letter. Nathan realizes the man is Kane after talking with his dad. Kane is well known shop owner in the village, who is not trusted by the Indians. Kane discovered the treasure and died at the end of the book because he puts his greed before his safety. I enjoyed Ghost Canoe because there is a mystery within the story. It kept me guessing from the first page until the last. It was full of lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed how the identity of Kane was not revealed until later in the book. The story built as the book progressed to an ending I was not expecting. I could read the book again and find a clue I missed the first time. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others. Nathan is close to my age and the book gave me an idea of what it was like to live back then. The book was set on the West Coast, and I was able to imagine what the area might look like. I also found it interesting to read about the local Indians and their way of life. I thought it was neat that the lighthouse is still there today. Ghost Canoe is a fast paced book that is easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. Lastly, it is a great account about the history of the expansion of our country and how the west was settled. By: C. Copeland

Ghost Canoe,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ghost Canoe (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. I am not a book person but I had to do a project for school and I choose this book. I was really impressed with the way the book keep my attention during my reading. After I finished a chapter I would just keep going. I normally never ever read even if I have a book report to do. Not with this book I actually read the book and I am glad that I took the time to read the book because it was a very good book. Now I have done a couple book reports before but none of the books were any good they were just books that I randomly picked off the shelf and said that I was going to read it. That was never the case I would just make things up or copy and paste. This book as one of the ones that I fortunately did not do that with. I would definitely recommend this book to any one no matter their age it was a good read and they will like the book. What I liked most about the book was the adventure and the suspense of the shocking information the things that you don't expect to happen do and I think that was the reason that I kept reading the book.

Ghost Canoe-Better than it sounds!!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ghost Canoe (Paperback)
The book Ghost Canoe is a mystery written by Will Hobbs, it sounds pretty retarded but it's far from it. This is one of the best books I have ever read. I mean it puts the Harry Potter books to shame. It takes place of the coast of Washington State. And the main character of the book is 14 year old Nathan MaCallister, who is the son of a light-house keeper. There is a ship that crashes on the rocks in front of the shore. The local authorities say no one survived the crash but there is a set of foot prints on the beach. And stuff just does not add up with the crash. The book is pretty easy to understand I would say it's at a sixth grade level. This book is intended for anyone who wants a great action packed mystery all rolled into one.
