The Original "Ghost-Busters.",

This review is from: Ghost Catchers (DVD)
When a refined(?) Southern gentleman and his two lovely daughters rent a house in New York, no one bothers to tell them that it just might be haunted. When they hear strange noises they go next door for help, and get more than they bargained for when the help turns out to be Ole Olsen and Chic Johnson.
These two lead a merry madcap hunt for the ghost and attempt to drive him out of the house. They find that there's a little more to the house than they had thought, which causes their momentary incarceration, followed by their hilarious escape, followed by the almost mandatory chase scene. It's a load of laughs and well worth the cost, but please remember, it's black and white and the sound is in glorious schizophrenic orthopedic monaural. Still, if you want an hour and a half of classic vaudeville and slapstick, then "Ghost Catchers" is definitely your cup of whatever.

You either like Olsen and Johnson as a comedy team or you don't but their zaniness can get you laughing. This is their attempt at A&C's "Hold That Ghost" with similar overtones (they even poke fun at the A&C movie in one scene). There is a real ghost, Wilbur, amongst the crazy goings on but great character actors like Devine, Chaney Jr., and Norton are only in small segments of the film. Also, in the traditional O&J movie (dated) songs are added but in this film it sometimes moves the action along.
This movie is better than O&J's "Crazy House" but not as good as "Hellzapoppin". Just grab a bowl of popcorn and enjoy some slapstick comedy with a small amount of suspense thrown in. |
