From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-Two books that are sure to satisfy early chapter-book readers. In The Ghost Who Ate Chocolate, Saunders introduces the members of the Black Cat Club: leader Sam; skeptic Robert; adventurer Belinda; and her younger brother, Andrew. The story relates how the fifth member, a ghost, is added to the gang. There's rumor of strange noises, lights, and books falling to the floor in the children's room of the new library. The gang's investigation of these and other clues, including an 1899 dime left in Belinda's room, point to the Foster family, who owned a farm where the new library was built. Talking with old Miss Foster confirms that the ghost of an older sister, Alice, who died at age seven, always remained in the house. The gang sells the dime and buys a plaque for the children's room to try to pacify Alice. But instead, she deems herself an honorary member of the club. In The Haunted Skateboard, Alice helps the kids solve the mystery of an out-of-control skateboard. Spare ink sketches in both titles help set the mood.
