John Galley is a troubled man. Although a bounty hunter, and deadly with his Colt, he is trying to forget a dark past.
The story opens with Galley tracking and killing outlaw Billy Holmes, a stagecoach robber. When the bounty hunter takes Holmes' body to Julesburg, he is spotted by Sarah Clinton.
Sarah has been looking for a man like Galley for a long time. She needs someone to avenge the death of her father. She speaks to Galley's friend Wiley, an ex-lawman who was forced to retire due to arthritis.
When she tells Wiley that she needs Galley to kill the infamous outlaw Red McCready, the ex-lawman tells her that he kows Galley will take such a dangerous job because he seems to have a death wish. Wiley has no idea what happened in Galley's past but knows it was something terrible.
Nothing is as simple as it seems, and while waiting in Julesburg for his bounty on Holmes, Galley makes enemies of the Colton brothers and Sarah makes an enemy of a saloon owner who tries to rape her. They light out of town, ready to avenge the death of Sarah's father at the hands of McCready.
The Colton brothers, though, set out for vengeance of their own and soon Galley finds himself trying to protect Sarah and Wiley as well as himself. His skills in horsemanship, cunning and gunfighting are tested to their limits.
When Sioux Indians force Galley to take part in the mystical Ghost Dance, he must face his dark past head-on and conquer his ultimate enemy...himself...before he fights Red McCready to the death.
