Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8 In a magical place there is a cat, and this is the tale she tells. It is the story of Chingis, a Woman of Power, a most gifted shaman who lives in a house which runs on the legs of a chicken. It is the story of Safa, the Czar's son, who has spent his entire life in a windowless room and knows nothing of the sky or trees, or even the world of men. It is the story of how these two most lonely souls bond together to fight their most fearful and fearing enemies. Price has a strong understanding of folklore and has previously collected some unusual and lesser-known European tales ( Ghost at Large Faber, 1984). In this novel she weaves together many common folkloric themes into an original story which is both charmingly new and hauntingly familiar. From the very first page readers are drawn into a northern land where winter is a cold half year of darkness, a land where a slave woman would willingly give her infant daughter to a witch so that she may be free, and where a cruel king could imprison his newborn son. In one of the most powerful scenes in the book Chingas leads the adult Safa from his windowless prison into the world. The story is told simply and cleanly with no excess words to mask the emotions, and still the language is lyrical and poetic. A perfect read aloud for older children. Susan M. Harding, Mesquite Public Library, Tex.

More About the Author

On the day I was born, my Dad was given a typewriter. My Dad also signed my first contract, because I was too young to sign it - I was 16.

It was Dad who gave me the First and Second Jungle Books and the Just-So Stories for my seventh Christmas present too - and I still love them. But it was my mother who did all she could to teach me to read and to love books.

I've written 55 books, from Nursery Stories to things like 'The Bearwood Witch' and 'The Sterkarm Handshake' which are criticised for being 'too adult'.

Recently, I've joined the kindle revolution. I plan to publish most of my backlist on kindle, and I have joined together with several other writers to form Kindle Authors UK - see the blog feeds below. Look me up in the Kindle Store!

I also give talks in schools, and am RLF Fellow at De Montfort University in Leicester.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite, April 7, 2002
This book is my all-time favorite. I read it when I was nine years old and have loved it ever since then. (I'm almost 18 if you're wondering..)

It's one of the most original books I've ever read and is just fantastic. It really gets better with the age of the reader. I can now understand some of the gentle sarcasm that I didn't get in the fourth grade, etc etc. It's hard to find, but if you get the chance, I highly recommend giving it a chance.
