4.0 out of 5 stars An original, well-thought-out package, October 25, 2008
This review is from: Ghost Files: The Haunting Truth (Hardcover)
Ghost Files: The Haunting Truth purports to be the archives of the secret Ghost Society, which endeavors to track down and verify reports of hauntings around the world. In reality, this book is a collection of ghost stories, often vague and lacking in detail, many I suspect sprung entirely from the imaginations of Eugene and Mary Kuryla Yelchin, whose writing credits are hard to find in the back of the book.

But this book isn't really a serious study for ghost hunters to reference. Rather, it's the presentation that makes this book a treat.

The stories here aren't just text on a page. Instead, the Yelchins have crafted their tales into a collection of windows that slide, packets that fold out and letters you can remove from their envelopes, all making Ghost Files seem very much like a ghost hunter's scrapbook. There's even a variant on a Ouija board tucked in the back.

Eugene Yelchin provides lavish, ghoulish illustrations throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, January 22, 2009
This review is from: Ghost Files: The Haunting Truth (Hardcover)
For anyone remotely interested in the world of ghosts, hauntings, poltergeists, psychics, or mediums, GHOST FILES is definitely the book you want in your collection!

All of the basics are covered, as well as additional information on haunted houses, doppelgangers, haunted waters, making contact with ghosts, ghostly animals, and even the ghosts of Japan. Japan, it turns out, is occupied by a whole slew of ghosts, and they even have a yearly festival, called the Obon, to honor and acknowledge their huge number of ghostly citizens.

Filled with envelopes of surprising goodies, lift-the-flap tidbits, and additional booklets and miscellany, GHOST FILES is sure to capture the attention of even younger readers. This is a great addition to a home or classroom library, but it's sure to appeal most strongly to those readers who already have a fascination with all things ghostly.

Although not everyone will be interested in how to hold a seance or use a Ouija board, there's enough information within the pages of the book to satisfy any reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting Review: Ghost Files The Haunting Truth, October 14, 2008
This review is from: Ghost Files: The Haunting Truth (Hardcover)
GHOST FILES: THE HAUNTING TRUTH
THE GHOST SOCIETY
Paranormal Young Adult
HarperCollins

Rating: 4.5 Enchantments

Told as the secret files from `The Ghost Society', the GHOST FILES fills its pages profiling several different haunted locals including the Glamis Castle in the UK as well as giving information on types of ghosts and hauntings.

I really liked this book. Every page had something interesting on it, whether it was a moving part, an extra bit of info, more artwork or in the case of the one, a pull out Talking Board. I really liked the info on doppelgangers and apparitions, as well as the signs your house is haunted. The story about the haunted pirate ship was pretty interesting and one of the highlights of the book.

As the back of the book suggests, this is a great book for ages 10 and up, as there are a few spookier parts and the illustrations of a skull might be a little mature for the younger crowd. All in all, anyone interested in ghosts and the supernatural would enjoy the GHOST FILES: THE HAUNTING TRUTH.
