Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the start of Agatha-winner Hart's whimsical fourth novel featuring departed spirit Bailey Ruth Raeburn (after 2010's Ghost at Work), Bailey Ruth of heaven's Department of Good Intentions arrives at the Adelaide, Okla., home of video-game millionaire Nick Magruder just in time to prevent a gunman from shooting him. Since the shade of Nick's doting Aunt Dee engineered this mission on the sly, Bailey Ruth must operate on earth without her otherworldly powers. When Nick is accused of a murder, she must rely on her wits alone to clear him. Though not fully developed, the secondary characters have some amusing quirks, and even the villain, who's not readily identifiable, has a certain charm. The well-constructed plot offers an ample supply of red herrings. Fans of benign ghosts such as those in Blithe Spirit and Topper will find a lot to like. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider. (Oct.)

From Booklist

This is award-winning mystery author Hart’s fourth novel featuring Bailey Ruth. She is an emissary from heaven who returns to her small hometown to help people, but the usual protocol has been bypassed by a ghost who wants Bailey to aid the ghost’s troubled nephew, Nick. She sends the unwitting Bailey, who, because of the breach in protocol, is stripped of her usual powers once she arrives. Bailey pushes Nick out of the way when someone shoots at him, but she has no money, identification, or even clothes, which hampers her investigation into discovering who wants him dead. Nick resents Bailey’s help even after realizing his Aunt Dee sent her. The greedy Cole tries to blackmail Nick so he can have the land that Nick wanted to buy, but Cole is killed by a rifle when the two get into an argument. Nick is the main suspect, and Aunt Dee comes to Earth to help Bailey clear him, resulting in a fun partnership. History and hidden treasure add interesting elements to the plot. Fans of Sue Ann Jaffarian’s Ghost of Granny Apples series will also enjoy this entry in an amusing, clever series.. --Amy Alessio

It has been some time since Bailey Ruth has been summoned to the Department of Good Intentions, and despite all the enjoyment Heaven can provide she wishes to go back to Earth to help someone in trouble. So when a mysterious telegram asks her to go back to her old stomping grounds in Adelade she jumps at the chance. Once there she meets a young man named Nick, who she saves from being shot by soeone with a rifle. However this has unexpected consequences as when she appears she loses her abilites to disappear, change clothes, and teleport. Now as one OF the Earth she begins to work on the mystery of who wants to kill Nick, only to learn that her mission was not sanctioned by Wiggins but by dead Aunt Dee, who is worried about Nick. But when Nick is the suspect of killing his old school rival, both Bailey Ruth and Dee must convience Wiggins (who despite being dead, I am surprised he is not gray, bald, or pulling his hair out)that they need to stay to prove Nick's innocence and discover the mystery of the Arnold property.

I have been waiting for this book, and it has not disappointed. A mystery in a mystery as you watch three different personalities clash, try to co-exist, and maybe learn to work together (as I said I feel for poor Wiggins). Carolyn Hart works her magic again in this series and I hope it is not as long to wait for the next episode.

Once again Bailey Ruth is sent from heaven as an emissary to help with a situation in her old hometown. Only this time she isn't really sent, but dragged, and dropped into the situation. Initially that presents a problem for Bailey Ruth because she is visible and doesn't have the power to change or move. Wiggins, who is usually the train conductor who sends Bailey Ruth on her missions, and reminds her of the important precepts seems to not be available. So Bailey Ruth is on her own. To explain her presence she comes up with the idea of pretending to be a private investigator hired by the intended victim whom she has just saved. Eventually the ghost of victim's Aunt Dee comes into the picture and it turns out she has dragged Bailey Ruth here because Dee is not supposed to interfere with the lives of her family. Bailey and Dee are forced to work together to solve the mystery of who was after Nick, finding other victims of the murderer and figuring out how they can communicate with the police captain to inform him of the various clues they find. A great mystery.

Carolyn Hart has Baily Ruth Rayburn visiting earth again, but GHOSTS GONE WILD doesn't have the refreshing zip of previous titles in the series.
Baily Ruth gets shanghaied by another ghost who can't get Wiggins to put her nephew on the emergency list when someone wants him dead. I'm not sure if two ghosts in the mix doesn't spoil the cake.
Fans will love another adventure with an enterprising ghost who can't obey the rules.

Once again the heavenly Bailey Ruth visits her old home town to help Chief Cobb solve a crime. Caroline Hart 's characters are well defined and interesting. The story keeps up the suspense to the end.

Kudos again to Carolyn Hart ! You are caught up from the very beginning and left with many suspects, twists and turns, humor, and as always, not till about the end do you discover along with our ghostly sleuths, who did it. I am never disappointed with all of Ms Hart's books.
