Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2–“There's a ghost in the house/In the creepy haunted house/On this dark, spooky night, all alone./And he goes slip-slide/With a swoop and a glide/Until suddenly he hears… a groan!” The next page reveals a skinny mummy with an egg-shaped head; together they prowl around the house until they find a monster. The group discovers a skeleton and then a witch. But the last creature they find is the most frightening of all: a boy! The discovery sends the five creatures running from the house in a panic as the child calls, “Good night!” At first, the ghost and his friends are worried about who they will meet around the next corner, but smile when they encounter another of their ilk. This cumulative counting story consists of full-spread, digital artwork that features nonthreatening creatures set against smudgy backgrounds that evoke the feeling of an old, abandoned house. The simple rhyme has a bouncy rhythm that would make this book an enjoyable read-aloud for a not-so-scary storytime. This slightly spooky tale does not mention Halloween, so it can be enjoyed year-round.–Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. About the Author

Ammi-Joan Paquette has never met a ghost, mummy, monster, skeleton, or witch — as far as she knows. This book, she says, was inspired by a game she used to play with her sister: "Most of the details have been lost to time, but I still remember the shivery thrill I got when we played it. So, I drew on that same energy to write a spooky picture book, which eventually became A Ghost in the House." In addition to writing, Joan is also a literary agent representing authors of children’s books. She lives outside Boston with her family.

Adam Record started doodling on a bench in church. He only started to get serious about drawing after someone bought one of his drawings. He gets inspired by old children’s books and vintage posters. This is his first picture book. Adam Record lives in Utah with his wife and two children.

More About the Author

She lives outside of Boston, Massachusetts, where she balances her own writing and her day job as a literary agent. Visit her on the web at www.ajpaquette.com

This is such a great book and a perfect blend of scary tension and cuteness. As you're reading the fun rhyming story to your child, there is always a spooky sound before the reveal of the monster. Kids can guess what horrible creature is lurking behind the corner. But the thing is, the monsters are so cute!!! But they're not cutie-pie cute, they're monster cute. I love the dirty texture of the art - it gives the book it's dark, spooky feel, but the fun expressions on the characters make this book sweet enough for little kids. The rhyme is fun, the art is great - a lovely picture book for the kiddos.

Does anyone else think the ghost on the cover looks almost EXACTLY like Bloo from the television show Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends? It's a cute book, but that was the first thought I had when I saw the cover.
