Book Description

4 and up
Bo is a little girl who loves to read stories before bedtime. One evening, as she is reading an especially funny tale about a witch with stinky feet, all the lights go out. Before she can recover, a clammy hand grabs one end of her book. She closes her eyes and holds on tight to the other end. Bo and her story book are whisked away to a strange place where she has never been before. When she opens her eyes, she finds herself standing in the Ghost Library, a gigantic, spooky room filled with empty shelves. It isn't long before she meets the friendly ghosts who regularly visit this place. They're constantly looking for more good stories—but their shelves are always empty. Bo is a little girl whose head is filled with ideas. She dreams up the perfect way to help the ghosts fill their library with wonderful stories. David Melling's funny, highly-detailed, full-color illustrations complement his amusing tale. They include a cleverly extended three-panel illustration with a gatefold and three two-page spreads that tell Bo's story in purely pictorial images.

Bo was reading her favorite book, when without warning ...

the lights went out!

Bo felt a cold chill.

Whispers sniffled and snuffled in the dark. Shadows shivered closer.

A clammy hand grabbed Bo’s book . . .

“GOT IT!” squealed a voice!

Boys and girls who have enjoyed The Ghost Library will also want to read two more of David Melling’s funny and captivating books: The Kiss That Missed and The Tale of Jack Frost.

Praise for The Kiss That Missed:

“Readers will find both the text and the playful color cartoon illustrations amusing. Melling captures great expressions in his caricatures....”

5.0 out of 5 stars This Library Is Empty!, September 28, 2009
This review is from: The Ghost Library (Hardcover)
A child develops an insatiable love for reading through the time spent with a parent who is the one reading to him or her; obviously, the parent has already developed the love for reading and passes it on to the child. If on the other hand, reading the book, becomes an assignment for school, the love for reading may thin out, if this "love for reading" has not been nurtured by the parent. Hopefully, enough time between the parent and the child is spent on reading, and the child enlarges his or her world with reading wonderful books.

This story will take you into the life of one little girl, named Bo, who loves to read stories before bedtime. Her parents didn't prop her in front of the television or the computer where the media would get her all agitated and hyper before bedtime. As she sits on her bed, reading from the latest book of interest, Ghost Library, the electricity in the house goes out. She is so captivated with the story she is reading that, in the next moment, while she is holding on to her book, a clammy hand reaches for the book in a tug-of war.

Rather than panic, Bo holds on tight to the book, and is whisked away to a place where she has never been before. Once she opens her eyes, she realizes that she is standing in a gigantic library where the room is filled with empty shelves. Yes, "empty shelves". While there, the regular patrons, "the friendly ghosts" explain that they are looking for interesting stories to read, but the shelves are empty.

Bo is a very creative child, filled with great ideas. She dreams up ways of helping the ghosts fill their library with interesting books.

Part of this story contains a clever cartoon-like segment that you may want to write a story for; maybe your child can create the story and you can journal it for him or her. Maybe this story will inspire your son or daughter to think of other ways of helping people. You, no doubt, will inspire her to help others, as she makes plans for her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible book!, January 16, 2009
By
This review is from: The Ghost Library (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book for young children, particularly elementary age. Writing a story can be daunting, and may seem to many children like something that only those who are grown-up or really smart or talented can do. This book is about a little girl who teaches ghosts (who attempt to "borrow" her favorite book for their library) that anyone can write a story, and they use the skills she gives them to fill their library with stories of their own.
