Grade 3-4?This book requires some dexterity to read, but the coterie of dim, eerily lit ghosts drifting through 3-D scenes may entice young fans of the macabre to make the effort. Like Audrey Wood's Journey to the Haunted Planet (HarperCollins, 1995) and other books of its ilk, the plotline is vanishingly thin ("you" reunite dead lovers after touring a ruined mansion in which ghosts rehearse details of a tragedy from Civil War days), but rather than the more common holograms, the illustrations are elaborately staged and manipulated stereo photos; hold up the supplied special glasses, move the book back and forth until the pictures come into focus, and the scenes?especially the climactic one, of a skeleton with a bayonet thrust into its chest?jump out in exquisitely sharp detail. With the help of a substantial crew, including a "spider wranger," Johnson revives an old photographic technique to good effect here, but the unattached eyewear needed to enjoy it fully will present a problem in most libraries.?John Peters, New York Public Library
