4.0 out of 5 stars autocthonous!, November 4, 2002

in tallahassee, fla, my favorite billboard was one which shouted in towering yellow letters "AUTOCTHONOUS!" it was really cool even though it was for superlube oil changing and such. i think it means "self-generated from the earth" or at least that's what i told everyone else who was in the car with me. i suppose 40wt. motor oil could be put in that class although i found it confusing. i also purchased "ghost plants" by thuja there and they will always be linked mnemonically, as thuja's music seems to emanate directly from the ground below you, or as if someone is doing something in an adjacent room. there is lots of rumbling and scraping and bowing and vibrating. unidentifiable things sound like tiny bells and then crash. one of the cool things about thuja is that they completely blur the dividing line between "standard" sound sources like guitars, bass, drums, etc. and taped or miked retrievals from the world outside your house, moss, antlers, water, twigs, stones, etc, in a manner which suggests that all objects are equivalent for musical production. that this is literally a rock band makes them extra cool. also, ghost plants like to live in trees or on ledges and do not require contact with the earth to live. noncthonous, sort of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like nothing else, February 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Ghost Plants (Audio CD)
This CD is amazing! I first heard Thuja on the Emily Strange website and have been in love ever since. It's melodic, yet at the same time, eerie. Overall, an awesome CD and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something outside the box.
