5.0 out of 5 stars Good Narrative and Lyric Poetry, August 9, 1999

Hey, you don't have to be a poetry reader to enjoy these great poems. Of course, you probably heard "Forgiving Our Fathers" at the end of Smoke Signals, but that is only the beginning. Many other father poems, lots of humor ("George Bush and Peter Pan" and "rest easy Bill Clinton"). Dare to read poetry. This guy will have you hooked in no time. All I have to say is thanks to Sherman Alexie for making sure I read Dick Lourie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness is heartrending., September 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Ghost Radio (Paperback)
I saw "Smoke Signals" about a month ago and have been searching for the poem about forgiving our fathers that long. The paradoxical lines were like drums. Each half of a line would impact and then the next half would thunder. It's worth the money to have the book for that poem. I find it very difficult to read poetry but I could relate to these sentiments. Thank you, Dick Lourie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Becoming a fan, June 15, 2001

It isn't strange that after watching "Smoke Signals" one tries to get along with Louri's literature. However to me, a brazilian, it was almost impossible, if not for Amazon Books. After reading 'Ghost Radio',the pleasure caused by powerful words was greater than the language/cultural barrier. The poems about family and music are of universal beauty and strength. The political poems, though interesting, are "too american" to a foreigner. "Forgiving our Fathers" is a piece of art, touching hard and talking softly to our hearts. Thank you Dick for letting me open a new horizon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lourie's poetry is powerful and lasting, September 5, 2000
This review is from: Ghost Radio (Hardcover)
You may "find" Dick Lourie's poetry, like I did, because of hearing his poem Forgiving Our Fathers in the movie, Smoke Signals, or through his association with Sherman Alexie, but, once you read Ghost Radio, you will forever appreciate Dick Lourie as his own persona. His poetry is intelligent, powerful, thoughtful, and emotional. This is a man who has lived studying our world, the mixed-bag of American culture and politics, and he paid great attention. He's got important things to say, and he says them beautifully. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. Since I can't, I buy it for friends.

This movie brought out the most of beening what is really like when you grew up and it is a eye opener to the ones that never lived that life. But it was really exciting to see this movie making it out there. I hope to see more real movies like this come out again. I hope to meet sherman one day.
