Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 An unusual twist on the usual young detective group. Four of these members are ghosts, who communciate with the two living Squad members via word processor. In this third adventure, the ghostly members of the Squad observe Vinnie, stepson of the local senator, slipping needles into the Halloween candy to be distributed at the senator's televised Halloween party for underprivileged children. When the Ghost Squad can't convince the authorities of the danger, they decide to infiltrate the party themselves to try to prevent the plot from succeeding. Their task is complicated by the appearance of a Malev, a malevolent ghost out to avenge his own death, which he blames on the Squad members. The story is fast paced and exciting, and the climactic struggle with the Malev is one of the spookiest scenes to come along in years. The characters, ghostly and otherwise, are realistic, and the portrayal of the advantages and disadvantages of "life" as a ghost is absolutely convincing. Readers will stand in line for this Halloween treat. Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, Ill.
