Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 The latest in a continuing series about the adventures of the ghost squad. Joe Armstrong and his three fellow ghosts, together with the two human boys who have befriended them, uncover the identity of Joe's murderer. With their supernatural powers, the ghost squad discovers to its horror that the outwardly mild but inwardly paranoid Clem Jackson, a one-time employee of Joe's, has killed more than once, and is already planning another murder. Their efforts to thwart his evil intentions, however, are complicated by the sudden reappearance of their old enemy, the Ghoul of Grunberg, leader of a group of Malevs (or evil ghosts). Hildick has created a fascinating world of the supernatural, as well as another world: that of ``superghosts' (or ``ghosts'' of ghosts). He sets it up clearly and believably and nicely integrates it into his absorbing and action-filled mystery. The result is a story that should appeal to young science fiction and fantasy buffs as well as mystery lovers. Perhaps the story's only real weakness is an overabundance of bad guys instead of one believable yet menacing villain. Overall, though, The Ghost Squad and the Menace of the Malevs should make a welcome addition to most collections. Ruth Sadasivan, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, Ohio
