Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9 Mystery and ghost story fans should love the fifth in this series. Evil Dr. Purcell, with his sidekicks Muscle and Memory, scheme to have ``hermit'' ghosts take over moribund bodies of the living, including friends and acquaintances of the Ghost Squad. The Squad, which includes teenaged ghosts and their live friends, is galvanized into action when one of the would-be victims turns out to be the younger sister of Danny Green, a ghostly member of the Squad. Another person at risk is Tommy Peck, an alcoholic who plays Santa Claus during the town's annual Christmas festivities. He barely survives during a breathtaking battle between good and diabolical ghosts. Although this all sounds rather grim, Hildick maintains a light touch throughout, skillfully blending reality and the supernatural. Ghostly and living members of the Squad communicate by means of a computer, one of the nifty devices Hildick uses to maintain credibility. A surefire hit. Judy Greenfield, Rye Free Reading Room, N.Y.
