Glen Campbell Discusses Career & New Album

Biography

Becoming a bonafide living legend isn’t as easy as Glen Campbell makes it look. First, you have to have a solid foundation of talent on which to build — like being one of the hottest guitar players in the world. Then you have to record songs that will stand the test of time — standards such as “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” and “Wichita Lineman.” And ... Read more in Amazon's Glen Campbell Store

Editorial Reviews

During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has sold 45 million records with hits like "Witchita Lineman, " "Gentle On My Mind, " "Rhinestone Cowboy, " and tons more. Ghost On The Canvas is his "farewell album, " a deep, meaningful look back at his career/life with contributions by the artists he continues to inspire. We re proud to be an integral part of the legendary Glen Campbell s final studio album featuring collaborations with Jakob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Chris Isaak, Bob Pollard (Guided by Voices), Dick Dale, and Billy Corgan, among others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glen Campbell's Best - A Beautiful Goodbye August 29, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
"One thing I know, the world's been good to me. A better place awaits, you'll see".

The opening track on "Ghost on the Canvas" of "A Better Place", paints a picture of a man who has seen many good and bad times throughout his life. He has accepted that the world has been good to him, and that a better place (Heaven and the twilight of his life) awaits. The title track which was penned by Glen Campbell and producer Julian Raymond sets the tone for this beautiful album.

"Ghost on the Canvas" has a real spiritual quality to it. It is really an open book, where the author (Glen Campbell) takes you on a journey through his life. He doesn't sugar coat his missteps or failings, but learns from them. I don't know if I've heard a more spiritual or heartfelt album than "Ghost on the Canvas".

I have been a fan of Glen Campbell's since I can remember. I was born in the mid eighties and was introduced to Glen as the voice of the rooster "Chaunticleer" from the animated film, "Rock A Doodle". I remember wondering, "Who is the guy that sings so well". It was Glen Campbell. As I grew older, I was introduced to one of his films, "True Grit" which placed him alongside the larger than life western legend, "John Wayne". I still think that his vocals from the title track are amongst his best.

In reality, for many years, from the late seventies through the 1990's, Glen Campbell was largely ignored by the music business and his peers. He was brushed off, as a has-been who couldn't decide whether he wanted to be country, rock, pop, or both. Glen Campbell is what he is, a one of a kind talent. Not only can he sing with the best of them, but plays the meanest and best guitar I have ever heard.

Glen Campbell is a music legend. If this album is his last, then it is a fine one. "Ghost On The Canvas" is a pretty love song. This song has a relaxed tone with goregous musical arrangements. This song reminds me of a poem with all the different images of ghosts and a wheat field. This tune is very romantic. "A Better Place" is a beautiful song that features Glen playing the acoustic guitar. This is a song about coming to terms with his mortality. It is a song about having a spiritual faith that I like very much. Nothing But The Whole Wide World is a song by Jakob Dylan, but Glen conveys a wisdom in his vocals. This truly makes this song his own. "Strong" is an autobiographical song about how Glen feels about living with Alzheimers disease. Glen expresses his fear of living with the disease in the song, but I detect a sense of his inner strength listening to this song. "There's No Me Without You" is a song about an enduring love. Billy Corgan and Brian Setzer lend their talents playing the guitar on this tune. "A Thousand Lifetimes" is another personal song about the highs and lows of Glen's life. "The Billstown Crossroads" is one minute of soothing instrumental music. This piece of music is a tribute to a small town in Arkansas close to where Glen grew up. "Valley Of The Sun" is another instrumental piece. This piece features superb piano playing. "Ghost On The Canvas" contains excellent songs and instrumental music. It is an enjoyable album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and The Human Condition August 31, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a beautiful album! It is heartfelt, honest, and beautiful to listen to. I am so grateful for the experience of listening to this. I am also grateful for the existence of musicians like Glen Campbell who sing about something deeper than bling, booty, and childish posturing. This album has great songs, beautifully performed and recorded. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Glen Campbell album August 31, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Glen Campbell would still be one of the finest recording artists even if he never picked up a guitar. The tonal range of his voice has not diminished at all from "By the Time I get to Phoenix" to "Ghost on the Canvas." The only person I can compare Glen Campbell to is Glen Campbell. What a blast to get to have another exciting set of songs from such a beautiful voice. This album has the same great range of melodies like his albums from the 60's and 70's had. It's not a re-hash. It's all new and sounds as good as a fresh platter of vinyl from a cardboard jacket in 1969. Even though they call this the last "Studio" album from Glen Campbell I hope he records a few more. I don't care if they have to hide a mic in his shower!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dear Music Appreciator August 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Dear Music Appreciator,

It only took me about five seconds to relax and give in to Glen Campbell's new record GHOST ON THE CANVAS. The man still knows how to sing and there is just something warm and inviting about his voice and his music. Music, lyrics, production, persona - the whole feel of this Glen Campbell record fascinates me - I'm not sure if I should put on a cowboy hat or a trench coat, build a fire in the fireplace or go deserted highway driving at night. I'm not sure if I've stepped back into the seventies or stepped forward into a future where the world has been completely cast in a sheen of sunrise-seventies-AM-radio-country-rock-croonerdom.

Fans of Paul Westerberg, Teddy Thompson, and Jakob Dylan should take note and give Glen Campbell a try, as he skillfully covers their songs "Ghost On the Canvas," "In My Arms," and "Nothing But the Whole Wide World" respectively.

I read that this is Glen Campbell's last full length studio album due to his struggle with Alzheimer's, and listening with that in mind makes this record a bittersweet affair - longtime fans will find this to be a satisfying swan song and newcomers hopefully will hear this and embark on an expedition through his earlier albums, lamenting along the way that such a bright star as this has to burn out so beautifully before his time.

Sincerely,

Constant Listener
