Editorial Reviews

During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has sold 45 million records with hits like "Witchita Lineman, " "Gentle On My Mind, " "Rhinestone Cowboy, " and tons more. Ghost On The Canvas is his "farewell album, " a deep, meaningful look back at his career/life with contributions by the artists he continues to inspire. We re proud to be an integral part of the legendary Glen Campbell s final studio album featuring collaborations with Jakob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Chris Isaak, Bob Pollard (Guided by Voices), Dick Dale, and Billy Corgan, among others.

"One thing I know, the world's been good to me. A better place awaits, you'll see".

The opening track on "Ghost on the Canvas" of "A Better Place", paints a picture of a man who has seen many good and bad times throughout his life. He has accepted that the world has been good to him, and that a better place (Heaven and the twilight of his life) awaits. The title track which was penned by Glen Campbell and producer Julian Raymond sets the tone for this beautiful album.

"Ghost on the Canvas" has a real spiritual quality to it. It is really an open book, where the author (Glen Campbell) takes you on a journey through his life. He doesn't sugar coat his missteps or failings, but learns from them. I don't know if I've heard a more spiritual or heartfelt album than "Ghost on the Canvas".

I have been a fan of Glen Campbell's since I can remember. I was born in the mid eighties and was introduced to Glen as the voice of the rooster "Chaunticleer" from the animated film, "Rock A Doodle". I remember wondering, "Who is the guy that sings so well". It was Glen Campbell. As I grew older, I was introduced to one of his films, "True Grit" which placed him alongside the larger than life western legend, "John Wayne". I still think that his vocals from the title track are amongst his best.

In reality, for many years, from the late seventies through the 1990's, Glen Campbell was largely ignored by the music business and his peers. He was brushed off, as a has-been who couldn't decide whether he wanted to be country, rock, pop, or both. Glen Campbell is what he is, a one of a kind talent. Not only can he sing with the best of them, but plays the meanest and best guitar I have ever heard.

Glen Campbell is a music legend. If this album is his last, then it is a fine one. "Ghost On The Canvas" is a pretty love song. This song has a relaxed tone with goregous musical arrangements. This song reminds me of a poem with all the different images of ghosts and a wheat field. This tune is very romantic. "A Better Place" is a beautiful song that features Glen playing the acoustic guitar. This is a song about coming to terms with his mortality. It is a song about having a spiritual faith that I like very much. Nothing But The Whole Wide World is a song by Jakob Dylan, but Glen conveys a wisdom in his vocals. This truly makes this song his own. "Strong" is an autobiographical song about how Glen feels about living with Alzheimers disease. Glen expresses his fear of living with the disease in the song, but I detect a sense of his inner strength listening to this song. "There's No Me Without You" is a song about an enduring love. Billy Corgan and Brian Setzer lend their talents playing the guitar on this tune. "A Thousand Lifetimes" is another personal song about the highs and lows of Glen's life. "The Billstown Crossroads" is one minute of soothing instrumental music. This piece of music is a tribute to a small town in Arkansas close to where Glen grew up. "Valley Of The Sun" is another instrumental piece. This piece features superb piano playing. "Ghost On The Canvas" contains excellent songs and instrumental music. It is an enjoyable album.

What a beautiful album! It is heartfelt, honest, and beautiful to listen to. I am so grateful for the experience of listening to this. I am also grateful for the existence of musicians like Glen Campbell who sing about something deeper than bling, booty, and childish posturing. This album has great songs, beautifully performed and recorded. Thank you.

First, yes, Julian Raymond is a youngish hot shot producer and Glen Campbell a legendary music veteran. That's where the Rick Rubin/Johnny Cash comparisons end. Cash was great, but his American Recording records were driven by drama and backstory. He had, for all practical purposes, lost his chops. He was never a premiere musician, had not written songs of note in many, many years and his voice was ragged. I understand that ragged voice closed out Cash's story in a wonderfully poignant way, but it was what it was.

Glen Campbell, tragically presented with his own drama in recent months, still has his chops. He is still a Class A musician and that stellar tenor has been weathered just enough by time to leave it still technically wonderful but tinged with the heartaches life has dealt the seventy five year old artist. Glen Campbell can still sing and play most of those half his age under the table.

Now, Ghost On The Canvas. Judging by early returns it's probably the most critically acclaimed album of Campbell's career. Largely viewed as a "singles" artist (one of the greatest in pop music history), his legacy rests on individually great songs. You know them. No need to list them here. From my perspective, the critical acclaim is deserved and this is probably GC's best overall album (with the possible exception of the mostly overlooked 1974 album "Reunion" - a thirty minute pop masterpiece).

"A Better Place", produced simply, is wrapped in beautiful melancholy as Campbell sings lines like:

Some days I'm so confused lord
My past gets in my way
I need the ones I love lord
More and more each day

It sets the tone for the album in terms of reflection, regret and, ultimately, having to move on, but hopefully.
