This book looks pretty, but its binding is not adapted for use out-of-doors. I would have thought it should have been bound in a guide- or map- or atlas-style book (or even hardcover) with large, flat pages, suitable for reference while traveling. Instead, it reads and looks like a large paperback novel. Its description is deceiving as it should say "Great for your library shelf but not much else!" If you're looking for a book with directions and good maps, keep looking. This one reads like a dry history book and it's virtually impossible to keep open unless you want to completely break its spine. Moreover, the table of contents looks like it was an after-thought as all the ghost towns are just lumped together by counties rather than by names. The maps in it are insulting to your intelligence as they look like the author copied them by his own hand and couldn't be bothered to research the lesser-traveled roads, but they're so miniscule anyway I imagine there would have been no room for road numbers. Indeed, you're better off picking up a FREE U.S. Forest Service map (especially of the San Juan National Forest) and saving yourself $30!

I'm truly sorry I bought this book as IT FRUSTRATES ME TO NO END: trying to locate certain places and traveling in my Jeep while trying to keep open this pretty-to-look-at-it-but-tiny-to-read "novel." I was able to find many ghost towns better on my own with a laminated map of ghost towns I bought for $6.95 than with Jessen's help. Save your $30 and research this stuff on the Internet.

What a colossal waste of money!
