In its fourth season, Ghost Whisperer takes a turn towards romance with a surprisingly gutsy twist for a show that's generally clung to an established (and popular) formula. Spoiler Alert: Jim (David Conrad), the idealized husband of she-who-communes-with-the-dead Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt), dies--but this is only the first of a series of plot turns that reboot their entire relationship, allowing fans to experience the courtship they never saw. Another big change: Prickly skeptic Rick Payne (Jay Mohr) departs and is replaced by Eli James (Jamie Kennedy), a psychologist whose near-death experience has left him with the ability to hear but not see ghosts. As Melinda mentors Eli (in a featurette, Hewitt refers to their relationship as "Batman and Robin"), Eli becomes a core member of Melinda's ad hoc family, including coworker Delia (Camryn Manheim) and her son Ned (Christoph Sanders). Despite these surprises and cast changes, Ghost Whisperer stays doggedly true to its combination of spooky chills, cleavage-emphasizing outfits, and heartwarming conclusions. Some episodes go a bit astray (Melinda literally enters a Matrix-y computer game in one; another teases with the possibility of vampires before firmly squelching the idea), but most grapple with unresolved feelings among family and friends. Over the course of the season, the show expands its own mythology with the Watchers and a mysterious book that promises supernatural doings in the future. The extra features are pretty disappointing: Generic featurettes on Kennedy and composer Mark Snow, lackluster "interactive games" that are little more than gussied-up trivia questionnaires, and dismal web series The Other Side--previous seasons had much more substantial bonus elements. Nonetheless, Ghost Whisperer: The Fourth Seasons offers its fans solid comfort television. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

Melinda Gordon communicates with earthbound spirits, ghosts who cling to the living because they have unfinished business that prevents them from moving beyond the familiar plane of existence that we call life. Inspired in part by the work of famed medium James Van Praagh and of Mary Ann Winkowski, a real-life communicator with spirits, Ghost Whisperer explores the spiritual side of life and death as Melinda navigates among the dead and the living in her sometimes chilling, sometimes heart-rending and sometimes amusing attempts to act as an intermediary between the ghosts and those they haunt. Jim, her husband, worries about the emotional toll this work is taking on his wife as they embark on a new life together. Melinda recently has revealed her gift to her new friend, Delia Banks, a single mom who works in Melinda's antique shop. However, Melinda fears the consequences of drawing Delia into this unconventional world.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best shows on TV December 5, 2009
Format:DVD
In an era of really bad TV, Ghost Whisperer is something very special. The writers took a risk in season 4 with this Sam character, but in the end it brought an interesting twist to the series. If you enjoy shows that deal with the supernatural, you will like this show.

Honestly, Jim dying was what grabbed me and pulled me in to watching. I was literally channel-flipping. I saw him with JLH's character and said, "oooh, he's cute," and watched the episode. I'd sort of looked on the show a bit here and there but really didn't make time to watch but wow! I'm making up for it now. I've backtracked to see what I'd missed and this is a really smart show. There's so much on TV, some shows really aren't appreciated they way they should be. An instant hit isn't always the best hit.

I look forward to this show every week and will buy season 4 when it comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Show Took an Amazing Turn October 3, 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is show is unique and amazing in many ways. No matter how "weird" or "supernatural" an episode gets, it still somehow seems almost realistic. This season DEFINITELY shows that with all of the drama that happens with Jim. Some people say that this choice was unneeded and it made the show worse. I disagree with those people because it showed how functionable and lovable Jim and Melinda's marriage is. On TV nowadays, it's all about sex and divorce. This show instead shows the happiness and hopefully true side of marriage. The episodes in this season are much darker and more intense, in my opinion. I look at the first season now and I'm like...wow...that seems so juvenile compared to where they are at now. It's amazing how much this show has progressed and matured. The first season was amazing when I watched it and I thought it was intense then, but each season gets better and better, unlike other shows. Buy this season now!! Fifth season has just started so you should watch that too!!! This show is amazing and you will love it. It's the only show, that I know of, that can go into almost full-on horror/suspense movie flick and then have a lovable, happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Season Made Me a Fan September 24, 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I never really watched Ghost Whisperer before Season 4. I thought it seemed like a silly premise. But then I caught the end of one of the shows on regular television, and I thought it looked sweet. A couple weeks later, I saw that Jim had been killed off. The fact that he died confused me since it didn't coincide with the earlier show I saw. So I began to watch it just to understand what had happened, and was amazed at the concept. I am now a really big fan of the show, and am in the process of watching all of the earlier seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED WATCHING March 30, 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I LOVED WATCHING ALL OF THESE GHOST WHISPERER EPISODES AND OWNED ALL OF THE DVD'S WHEN THEY WERE AVAILABLE. I THEN DONATED THEM TO THE LIBRARY SO OTHERS COULD ENJOY THEM. THE TELEVISION SHOW HAD WONDERFUL ACTING AND JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT WAS DELIGHTFUL, THE SHOW WAS ABOUT JENNIFER HAVING A GIFT AND HELPED OTHER PEOPLE SAY GOODBYE OR ACCEPT THEIR LOVED ONES PASSING TO THE OTHER SIDE. I BELIEVE IN HEAVEN AND THIS DID NOT EXACTLY DEPICT THAT. THE STORYLINE WAS REAL TO LIFE AND WAS CLEAN VIEWING THAT YOUR KIDS COULD WATCH.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the show, but it's getting really corny August 5, 2009
By K. S.
Format:DVD
I love this show, but each season it's getting more and more corny to me. That doesn't stop me from watching it though! My husband pretty much gave up on it when Delia's son was replaced by a different actor, and suddenly he went from a little kid to a teenager. And then Jamie Kennedy came on the show. Then when the husband died and came back, that was the last straw for my husband. I still love the show, despite all the crazy plot twists and actor changes. I will definitely be buying this season.

Box was intact, undented and nothing rattling inside. Haven't watched it yet but those are good signs that I won't be disappointed.
