A Shallow and Poorly Written Copy of Another Battletch Novel,
By Paul (New Orleans) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghost Of Winter (MechWarrior Series, #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
One of the very first Battletch novels written, "Decision at Thunder Rift", which started the saga of the Grey Death Legion, is also one of the best stories created in the Battletech Universe. A young man is forced into command of a mercenary unit, trains non-Mechwarrior's to join his new unit, and takes on an invading force. Sound familiar? It should, because this is also the basic plot of "Ghost of Winter", the first in the Mechwarrior series from FASA, and a part of the Battletech Universe. This book is an absolute mess. The characters are shallow, the pacing is absurdly quick, motivations are ridiculous, etc. The Battletch series has produced a number of excellent books; it's a shame that FASA decided to start the Mechwarrior series with such a piece of worthless tripe. The scary part is the ending of this book, which leaves room for a sequel. Perish the thought. Please?

Disappointed with "dumbing down" of the Battletech Universe,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ghost Of Winter (MechWarrior Series, #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
As a long time Science Fiction fan I was very disappointed with "Ghost of Winter" and FASA's "dumbing down" of the Battletech Universe. For several years now I've been reading the books of the Battletech Universe. With each new book release I would eagerly rush out to the bookstore in the hope that THIS release would be the one to take the Battletech Universe from mediocre "space opera" to truly great Science Fiction. Unfortunately, the Mechwarrior series takes the Battletech Universe in the opposite direction. The Mechwarrior series seems targeted for young adults. But unlike the young adult Science Fiction of years gone by, the Mechwarrior Series is just an adventure novel set in space. As a child I read Science Fiction designed for young adults and it excited, thrilled AND informed me about science and the universe. I owe much of my later interest in science and my pursuit of a career in a technical field to the Science Fiction authors of my youth, Asimov, Bradbury, Heinlen. "Ghost of Winter" does not inform the young reader about science. It does not challenge the reader, present new ideas, or even make the young reader think about anything but blowing stuff up. What "Ghost of Winter" IS, is essentially a story of a boy and his Battlemech. Boy gets mech, boy loses mech, boy stumbles on better mech AND gets girl to boot! End of story. There are some cheap thrills but nothing of ANY substance. Pure and simple this is watered down Battletech, and Battletech ain't that great to begin with! "Ghost of Winter" was well written and had a good adventure story line however, I can't recommend it. In future I will stick to the Battletech book series and skip any further books in the Mechwarrior book series. Foo Fighter

Pretty good, but I've read better.,

I was really hoping the next B-Tech book to come out would follow the plot line of the I.S. or clans, but I had to settle for this.It was ok though, good action but still i think that the Mechwarrior series will not be the same to dedicated Battletech readers. A good book for beginers, or just for cheap thrills.

BattleTech fans beware!,
By L.Coleman (Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ghost Of Winter (MechWarrior Series, #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
After slogging through the book with its rather mediocre writing, I perosanlly found the ending both unbelievable and unsatisfying. After walking across the room to pick up the book (where I had hurled it with great force moments before) I reread it hoping I had been wrong. Nope. It was still a poor ending. I had expected some grand battle to finish off the story, but not one in which all major characters (both good guys and bad guys) all walk away. All right, one was horribly burned. But no one paid that ultimate price for freedom (or in payment for some rather terrible crimes talked about (but rarely shown) in the novel). Kenson should stick to ShadowRun.

Ghost of Winter is an excellent book. Although the pacing is a little off in the beginning of the book, and a few plot threads never pan out, I would recommend it to anyone who is just getting started with Battletech and Mechwarrior. I hope to see more of Sturm and the Winter Ghosts in the future

Ghost of winter Review,
This review is from: Ghost Of Winter (MechWarrior Series, #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
At first I thought this was going to be another good guys on planet and evil bad guys come rushing in. Kenson suprised me. After I read through about 40 to 50 pages I couldn't put the book down. It was suspensful while entertaining, with of course a brilliant story line. The ending was also awesome (though I won't spoil it for anyone who hasen't read it yet), though it pretty stereo typical. Anyway, awesome book to start off a new series, if you haven't got. GET IT.

Best Mechwarrior book yet!,

This review is from: Ghost Of Winter (MechWarrior Series, #1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I found Ghost of Winter to be the most enjoyable of all the Mech books so far. It was full of action, as most Mech books are, but it also has a few nice twists in it that made you think. The story flows nicely and I found myself spending time reading it long after I should have gone to bed. I have to admit that I buy these books for my sons but I really enjoy them myself.

This book had heart-pounding action and you'll never know what'll happen next! It had some really surprising scenes. But the Mech battles were the best. They were highly descriptive and anyone who likes Mechwarrior should read this book. Trust me, It's good!

A great way to entertain both avid readers and newcomers,

This is definately now one of my all time favorite books now. Even though it doesnt mention any of the characters from the rest of the battletech novels, the author does a great job with bringing the story along and most of all does an execelent job at depicting the battles, something i feel has been a little weak in the battletech universe recently.
