Slimer Edition... sorta,
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ghostbusters the Video Game Amazon.com Exclusive Slimer Edition (Video Game)
Just a quick overview for those looking into buying the Slimer Edition versus the regular edition. This is a review of this particular edition and what it contains, and NOT a review of the game, which is pretty spectacular.
Quick background -- I've been a huge Ghostbusters fan every since I first saw the movie when I was quite young. I loved it ever since, and have collected some neat stuff from the series. When the Slimer Edition was announced, I said what the heck and canceled my GameStop pre-order and bought one of these So, here's the dirt. Amazon has been a little cagey about how this would all come, and I now know why... The Ectomobile light thing is nice looking. It is a little cheaper looking than the Johnny Rocket cars, but it has a lot of detail and a nice little box. Unfortunately, it is the only addition I don't have some sort of issue with. The Gamer Graffix Skinz isn't so much a console skin but instead it is simply a big sheet of poofy stickers. It's got the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Slimer on it with the firehouse symbol, but the only console it would fit on would be the PS3, and it would look ridiculous. I mean, I wasn't looking much forward to this part of the package anyway, and it still came up short. I was expecting to make the console into the look of the firehouse or something, but nope. Four poofy stickers. Next up, the Slimer Bust. It's cool. Actually, it's really cool. The complaint about Slimer being a little too see-through stands, but it definitely looks like Slimer direct from the movies. However, Amazon stated that you would receive with this a "certificate of authenticity signed by the sculptor himself." I thought this was really neat, and was very excited to get it. So, when I pulled out the cards and found out that it was a copy of the artist's signature, I couldn't help but be disappointed. Amazon -- don't tell us it will really be signed if it isn't. If it had been called a 'Certificate of Authenticity' and didn't mention it being signed, I wouldn't be disappointed. Thanks to that, I'm disappointed. And speaking of failure, the biggest thing -- Amazon has been advertising the packaging for the game to be different. Hell, I was literally thinking about buying all three of the Slimer versions to hold onto them as investments. Thank god I didn't -- The game IS THE NORMAL VERSION. The slip cover shown on here? It's false advertising. Yes, I know when you click on the graphic, it says that it doesn't necessarily represent the final look, but the final look was THE NORMAL GAME. Seriously? I outlaid an extra $50 at least in part because I wanted some different and exclusive artwork. Maybe that's lame, but it's true. And to have IDENTICAL artwork to the regular release? Amazon -- just advertise it as what it is -- Buy Ghostbusters and get more crap with it. This is NOT a Slimer Edition. It's the game with some cool extras. Having said that, the game is great and the extras if you are a Ghostbusters fan are well worth it. But if you're thinking of buying this as a video game collector looking for a rare version of a game in the future, don't bother.

So the game costs around 60 bucks, and if you are reading this is because you opted (like me) to buy the slimer edition.
I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS with the game... if you are a fan you will enjoy this game. As for the "extras" that 50 bucks buy you, again, if you are a fan you are going to be pleased. What REALLY bothers me is amazon's poor description of this "special edition" 1.- After reading the description youd think that it includes an ORIGINAL certificate of authenticity signed by Steve Johnson himself.... You do get one, but its a copy... its not an original certificate of authenticity. (When I bought the slimer edition I thought Id frame slimer's bust with the certificate thinking it would be an original, but not) 2.- When I preordered I thought that the GAME ITSELF would be a special edition (the cover of the game). Amazon put an original game copy and sent me to my email the "Special Edition Label" for me to print and insert on my game copy......... I mean, seriously.... have you ever heard of this before? The PDF they send you EVEN COMES WITH A LAME WATERMARK that says "This image does not reflect the final package" I mean, come on! I contacted Amazon's customer service and they offered me a refund... I dont want a refund, I want a Special edition of the game!.... Im still keeping it, but amazon should consider updating the info on this game description

If you are a Ghostbusters fan you are sure to like this game. It's very fun and just like the movie in every aspect but is fairly easy to beat. My six-year-old Son was able to beat the game on medium difficulty in about a week. He still loves playing the game and is now playing it again on the hardest level. You can play single player or multi-player online where you play for and accumulate points and unlock different weapons and upgrades. There is only one problem that I see with the game. It freezes up a lot during sections of the game that have a lot of action. It gets really annoying after a while because it happens so frequently.

Wait is That a 80's song I just quoted? why yes I did. NYC favorite paranormal exteriminators are back and have hit the video game console world now I know the game has been out for close to a year now but this game is great I'm still trying to get my platinum trophy still to this day. average rating for the game is 4 out of 5 9 out of 10 92% of 100% so that's a sign this game Rocks graphics are crisp and smooth no anti aliasing problems which plagues most third person type game very tight and responsive controls everything and everything can be destroyed don't like the look of that dining table blast away with the proton pack spell your name on the wall go right ahead but there's a catch implemented into the game is a damages and destruction counter the more ya blast away the more money is tallied up and where you are given a final grade at then end of each mission keep the damages to a minimum and you'll get a high score.it brings a form of balance to the game forcing you to strategize with your AI controlled members of your team instaed of just goign all out and blasting away there are times when the counter can be off sometimes one instance I remember shootimg a chair 60$ in destruction later on shot the same looking chair 535$ in damages? (must have been an antique) there's a trophy where your objective is to get damages below two hundred thousand try attempting that on the professional setting anyway the single player game is great as is the multiplayer the cast all lent their voice talent for the game minus Rick moranis and Annie potts a good game to have for any true Ghostbuster fan and video gamer ah remember the 80's what a decade.

this will have to do, until we get a official film sequel.... but I must admit that the writing is well done, generally funny, as charming as always, and gives me hope for the writing team for the actual film sequel.

The game gets a little boring after a while, but if you think of it in terms of being a sequel to the movies then it makes it a lot more interesting. In some respects releasing a sequel in this manner rather than failing miserably like they did with Ghostbusters 2 is preferable. Some folks may have loved the second movie, but in my opinion it stunk like nasty feet and scalloped corn. The game looks great, but like one reviewer said there are times when it's kind of fails in the graphics department. Usually during play and not in scenes. Overall good concept.
I guess the Slimer statue is fine. NOthing great about it, but since it was on a gold box deal at the price of purchasing the game I went for it. Can't lose when you get extra swag. BUt I will say the statue was much larger than I thought it would be and the base seems rather sturdy. There should have been a better way to affix the Slimer guy to the base other than a small post through his hand because I fear any pressure at all will snap his little green hand off. I would have never paid extra for it, but it's nice to have even if it just irritates my wife.

Game play relives the fun of the movies. Actual performances by film stars add to the cool factor. Altogether a neat game, though it may be a little spooky for the little kids.
Got the Amazon Deluxe Edition for the same price as the game alone, so everything that came with it was basically a bonus. Statue is neat, Ecto-1 Keychain is too cool to actually use, though I think it's a swell key fob. I agree with other reviewers that, for a "Deluxe" version, they could've made a a nicer package for it to have come in other than a cardboard box.

The game was everything i expected. A little cheesy in some parts, but overall pays a great tribute to the franchise. Ghostbuster fans of all ages will love this game. People not familar with the movies will still enjoy the game, but the voice overs and lines are like classic dialogue in the movies. This game is a true tribute the the seriers and is a must have for all Ghostbuster fans.

It's been a long time coming, but finally, this is a Ghostbusters game that isn't terrible. Unfortunately, it's still not that great, either. The love and care that went into this production is evident, and I feel guilty to speak poorly of it, but it's really not something I would recommend to just anyone.
Writing credits including Dan Aykroyd and Harrold Ramis, as well as voice talent from almost the entire cast of the original film (with the exclusion of Sigourney Weaver) are surely the biggest features in this package. The (perhaps necessary) concession was that the structure and pacing of the game feels exactly like a genuine Ghostbusters movie as it would likely have been produced in the 90s. You might think that sounds great, and it is, but it compromises little for entertaining gameplay. As a deliberately un-named, voiceless, mostly plot-irrelevant new recruit on the Ghostbusters team, your job is to test out all of Egon's potentially dangerous new devices for hunting and trapping hostile paranormal entities. This simple premise is a genius twist which opens the door for some of the game's best ideas. Because of this concept, it makes perfect sense for you, as the player, to stand back and enjoy the performances of these legendary masters of comedy without really interfering in such a way that would spoil the mood if you were actually playing *as* one of them. It doesn't payoff as well as it should, though, strictly because of strangely awkward, stilted animations in the cutscenes that effectively ruin the performances, flattening gags and failing to convey the intended emotional impact. The clever plot device also gracefully explains the new ghostbusting gear which offers opportunities for a very welcome variety of game mechanics. The core action of snaring a ghost in the traditional proton stream, and then wrestling them into the trap is serviceable, but I feel like I never really got the hang of it during the entire course of my complete "Casual" career (a complete play-through of the game on the easiest difficulty setting). It felt a lot more difficult and convoluted than it seems like it should be. Fortunately, since the game provided a valid excuse to introduce other items, I wasn't limited to that singular, slightly baffling routine. Before long, I was awarded use of equipment that would do things like slow down, or even temporarily solidify "full-roaming vapors", or my personal favorite; a slime sprayer that tethers two objects (including apparitions) together, and then contracts, to draw them together, with useful and sometimes very amusing results. Sadly, too many of the new weapons can be compared to real world equivalents, or especially to weapon types that have become run-of-the-mill tropes in games of this and similar genre. For instance, accompanying your "freeze ray" is a complementary blast that feels very much like a requisite first-person-shooter shotgun. One of the last weapons you're granted is very much just a machine gun, with an added bonus ability to send all of your firepower to the location you specify by shooting it with the accompanying weapon. On the plus side, all of these weapons and more can all be gradually upgraded by spending money earned from destroying public property (which makes sense once you play) lending a bit of role-playing statistical growth to the otherwise rigidly sequential course of the game. The most disappointing aspect of the cool new weapons is that because they're all handed to you in due course, and all of the areas of the game are opened only as the plot allows, woefully unfulfilled potential arises for the player to be challenged with puzzles and critical innovation that can never actually occur. Since this special "Slimer Edition" is an Amazon exclusive, I should mention that there's no difference in the game itself between this and the standard edition you can find on store shelves. This version comes with console decals, an electronic keychain in the shape of the Ecto-1 car, and a high quality statue of Slimer based on a sculpt by the character's original designer. Originally, a set of Mini-Mates figures based on some of the ghosts in the game were part of the offer, but Amazon informed me a few days before shipment that those would not be included due to lack of availability. To their credit, Amazon knocked an appropriate portion of the price off my purchase to compensate. Since this game does provide a perfectly competent 6 to 8 hour experience with only minor technical glitches or uninspired dynamics, there's no reason to condemn it too harshly. On top of that, there's a vast and intricate series of clever references to the source material that fans will be pleased to discover. If you seriously love Ghostbusters and don't mind an excruciatingly straightforward and by-the-numbers game, you might be delighted. |
