4.0 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack - not much different from original, April 26, 2006
This review is from: Ghostbusters (Audio CD)
"I've been slimed." That's how I feel after listening to the remastered Original Soundtrack Album of Ghostbusters. It does have good parts, no doubt, but how many times can you sit through various versions of Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters." Too many times, I was asked, "Who you gonna call... ?" It's a shame because this album has some great tunes.

The remastered has all of the songs that appear on the original plus the two additional songs: "Disco Inferno" and "Ghostbusters" 12-inch single remix.

Personal favorites include "Savin' The Day by Alessi," "Hot Night" by Laura Branigan, and "Cleanin' Up the Town" by The Bus Boys. What happened to them? Let's not forget the classic from the boys who were the kings of '80s love songs, "I Can Wait Forever" by Air Supply. Funny, I don't remember it being in the movie. However, I've since learned the song was played through the headphones of the guy moving the Ghostbusters' equipment out of the college. No wonder I didn't remember.

Also added is "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps. Again, I didn't remember this one in the movie especially since it's the wrong decade. Turns out it was played at Louis' party. The last bonus track is yet another version of "Ghostbusters."

Take out the 15 minutes of Ghostbusters songs, and the 11 minutes of "Disco Inferno," all of which comes to about half of the album in terms of time. And it's as good as the original album. The extras don't take it up a notch.

List of songs on the album:

1. "Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker Jr.
2. "Cleanin' Up The Town" - The Bus Boys
3. "Savin' The Day" - Alessi
4. "In The Name Of Love" - The Thompson Twins
5. "I Can Wait Forever" - Air Supply
6. "Hot Night" - Laura Branigan
7. "Magic" - Mick Smiley
8. "Main Title Theme" (Ghostbusters) - Elmer Bernstein
9. "Dana's Theme" - Elmer Bernstein
10. "Ghostbusters" (Instrumental Version) - Ray Parker Jr.
11. "Disco Inferno" - The Trammps [not on original album]
12. "Ghostbusters" (12 Inch Single Remix) - Ray Parker Jr. [not on original album]

Bottom line: A good replacement for the cassette tape you originally bought, but if you already have the original album on CD/DVD, you're not missing much. The newer version is cheaper than the older one and it has extras, so this is the better deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for 80s nostalgics, August 7, 2011

I bought this album just for nostalgia. I was around 11 years old when this movie came out and have great memories about it. Of course the soundtrack was a great part of it. I owned this in cassette back in the day (and I think I still have it somewhere). The "Ghostbusters" main theme was probably one of the most popular movie themes in the 80s. But there are also some underrated themes in there: The Thompson Twins' "In the name of love", Laura Branigan's "Hot night", Mick Smiley's "Magic", and so on. The orchestral themes by Elmer Benrstein are also great, specially "Dana's theme", although they feel a little out of place among the "pop" themes. The new themes (that were not included in the original release): "Disco inferno", and the "Ghostbusters" remix don't really add much to the quality, but I just ignore them... specially the ghostbusters remix. I mean, how many times do you need the same song in an album?
If you were a kid in the 80s and liked this soundtrack, go get it from Amazon (good price). It's not only a great soundtrack from those days. It's also a great compilation of 80s nostalgia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghostbusters soundtrack collector, July 17, 2009

This is the cd with 12 tracks on it from the Ghostbusters I. It is a re-issued version. The original cd has a sticker on it saying 'Priceless Collection' Original Recordings (various artists) which only has 10 tracks on it without "Disco Inferno" and "Ghostbusters" 12inchsingleremix. (That's where there is a cowbell being hit and jingled with the music.) Another release was where there was a yellow cd from Germany with "On Our Own" with Bobby Brown, two versions sung:
"On Our Own" (regular) and "On Our Own" (with rap). Don't forget to collect the rare green cd with the instrumental score of 39 tracks on it: Ghostbusters I (The Extended/Full-Length Soundtrack)3000 copies only. Of course, it is missing one track on it: "Somebody Let Me In" where Louis Tulley tries to enter the restaurant to escape the killer monster dog thing. It exists only on a cdr bootleg and was unreleased. (Also, note that there seems to be a difference in the "Savin' the Day" song on the cd with 12 tracks (this one) as apposed to the one with 10 b/c the original recording sounded better to me, more pronounced like in the movie.) There is also The Extended Ghostbusters II instrumental score that is hard to find out there with 35 tracks on it, I believe; and don't forget the Ghosbusters II music cd with various artists with songs like "Spirit" 'Spirit, spirit. Some people fear it. Spirit, some people just won't go near it."; and, yes, Mick Smiley's "Magic" song may start off slow at the beginning, but toward the middle of the song, it picks up and becomes the famous 'pop song' like where Dana walks toward the window when the spirits of 'pink light beams' come flying toward her apartment at her. "My baby told me once, my baby told me twice, my baby told me 3 times, three times thrice. Let's make some--I believe it's magic. I believe it's magic-magic. 'pop pop pop'. So it will get fast if you listen to the song the whole way thru.
