Book Description

January 1, 2000
A hundred years after their deaths, meet keepers who still keep the lights burning. Meet their spurned lovers, who moan and wail; wronged wives, who play pianos; bereaved mothers, who still search for their children; and devoted housewives, who still lend a hand with the cleaning choresall long-since passed away, at least from this realm. Travel round the borders of this great country, visiting the remote lighthouses of the two great oceans, and along the shores of the Great Lakes. Learn the grisly tales of disastrous deaths and unsolved murders, lost loves, and hurrendous storms. A wonderful read for all who love lighthouses or goosebump adventures.

This review is from: Ghostly Beacons: Haunted Lighthouses of North America (Paperback)
The title implies this book contains all "Haunted Lighthouses of North America," yet, many of the better-known haunted lighthouses are omitted. Additionally, some of the stories are confusing, e.g., the ghost at Hendricks Head Light in Maine. The author mentions a shipwreck and the child taken in by the keeper and his wife, then writes,"The ghost who haunts this seaport area of Southport may have been the mother of the orphaned girl. She is said to be an attractive young lady in her twenties. One night she was seen in the area. Locals spoke to her, but she was silent." Either the printer left out something, or the author did not adequately research the story. The shipwreck occurred in 1871. The "young lady in her twenties" was very much alive on the night she was seen by locals in 1945, but was discovered dead on the beach the following day. The author also omits some of the more interesting legends of the allegedly haunted beacons. Finally, as easy as it is to obtain photos today--it takes only a minute to email someone for permission to use a photograph--I cannot understand why the author chose to use a silly little piece of lighthouse clipart to illustrate many of her stories.
