Great book for the 8 to 14 demographic,
This review is from: The Ghostmobile (Paperback)
I remember this book fondly from my childhood (and more recently, since I like to reread old favorites).
Ryan's parents move his whole family from his beloved Illinois to corn-country Wisconsin. While his brother and sisters agree that things are better back by Lake Michigan, Ryan is very disappointed by their new home, an old brick schoolhouse that isn't even livable! His parents are eager to spend the summer renovating the place, but the kids are more interested in the ghostly glow that drives down their road every Monday night. Two ghosts piloting a bookmobile? The only way it could get weirder is if Ryan and his siblings board the Ghostmobile to free these strange ghosts from their haunt. Okay, despite the corniness of my synopsis, I love this book. It's got a good amount of fun supernatual and the realistic but not too serious perspective of a 12 year old. I moved a lot as a child, and Tapp communicates the grumpiness of a kid taken away from familiarity and friends, and the eventual acceptence of the new environment. Plus, she's funny. Brooke, the youngest sister, is a hilarious pest, and I still grin about Josh's (the clearly ADD brother) antics. Not to mention Tapp's little nod to all us nerds: Ryan is Trekkie.
