From Library Journal
Kelly is a gifted writer; her Hope series (Kid's Stuff, Scribner's, 1994) is delightful. This time out, Kelly leaves the English village for an archaeological dig in a southern French town destroyed by Catholic crusaders eradicating heretics. When Robyn Dawson disappears while working on the dig, her father and colleagues search for her. But she has returned to the year 1211 and is about to change the course of history. Kelly has a wonderful premise, and it is most interesting to see medieval life from the eyes of a modern girl who is trying to remember she is supposed to be a boy. The reader is caught up in both aspects of the story until the surprise ending, which left this reviewer confused and ultimately disappointed. Recommended, nonetheless, as enjoyable reading.?Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas P.L.

From Booklist
Malcolm receives the phone call every parent dreads: his 24-year-old daughter Robyn is missing from the site of an archaeological dig in France. Dazed and unused to travel, he goes to France and encounters Janey Silverman, who becomes his guardian angel, driving him to the site and helping him investigate. In her letters, Robyn had written about past inhabitants who were slaughtered by the church for heretical beliefs in 1211, but she rarely mentioned her coworkers, and Malcolm is not pleased to find that she was having an affair with one of the professors. While he and Janey search for clues in the present, a battered Robyn turns up in the village in the year 1211, only days before the massacre. Mistaken for a young nobleman, she tries to find out who betrayed the town. Kelly is skilled at delving into the psyches of characters, but, as many authors of time-travel books do, she leaves too many loose ends. Patty Engelmann
